true crime

Hannah took a selfie with a man at a fashion show. She would do anything to take it back.

The BBC podcast Stalked is a gripping true crime series that delves into Hannah Mossman Moore's harrowing experience as a young woman whose life was upended by relentless stalking and cyber harassment.

Co-hosted by Hannah and her "ex-step mum," investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr, the podcast explores the dark side of technology and obsession, shedding light on the underreported topic of stalking.

Stalked has dropped seven episodes so far with new instalments (and revelations) arriving weekly.

In the case of Hannah, her stalker used technology to watch her, threaten her and even impersonate her online. Feeling increasingly unsafe, Hannah turned to the police, but they were unable to stop the harassment or even recognise it as stalking.

And it all began at a fashion show when Hannah first encountered a mysterious man named Kin. This is Hannah's story from the very beginning.

Hannah Mossman Moore's true story that inspired her podcast Stalked.

At just 23 years old, Hannah Mossman Moore had completed her studies at the University of Edinburgh when she attended London Fashion Week for the first time in March, 2015.

Having secured an internship with jewellery startup Alighieri that had evolved into her dream job, Hannah was thrilled to find herself at an exciting show filled with prestigious fashion editors, renowned designers and celebrities.

It was there she met Kin, a well-dressed man from Hong Kong in his late 40s or early 50s, who was introduced to her by a mutual acquaintance. Hannah initially perceived him as a "big deal in the Asian fashion market", and he was someone with "real confidence," who seemed like he "knew everyone."

After Hannah and Kin were introduced at London Fashion Week, the two took a selfie together, a moment that Hannah recalls was the catalyst for her years of being tormented by a mysterious stalker.

Immediately after taking the selfie, Kin emailed Hannah, mentioning the photo. Podcast host Carole Cadwalladr points to the selfie as the start of their email correspondence. "You've got a photo of basically where the whole thing began," she said on the podcast.

Hannah herself reflects on this, saying, "I know. I wish at this moment someone had said to me, 'Okay, turn around.'"

Once Kin started their email relationship, their friendship continued to flourish as he would invite Hannah to exclusive fashion events and glamorous parties where she could network with all the right people and foster relationships, as she had aspirations to start her own jewellery brand one day.

"I saw him as an immediate fast track," Hannah reflected "He was a mentor who's always like, 'Okay, I'm going to help you get there'."

The time spent with Kin was a thrilling change of pace for Hannah.

"Being an intern for a jewellery brand, you would be sent out to get the coffee. You wouldn't be in on the exciting meetings. But all of a sudden, Kin really believed in me. He wanted to mentor me. That felt really good," she said.

Kin even offered to help her with accommodation during Paris Fashion Week and even emailed Jimmy Choo on her behalf.

But aside from his connections, Hannah enjoyed Kin's company, admitting that they "had a really good connection. We had fun together. We made each other laugh."

Hannah did note that she suspected Kin wanted their relationship to turn romantic. "I said 'For me this is a friendship. I'm not looking for anything else'," she recalled. However, Kin was dismissive in response. "We both want to hang out together and enjoy each other's company. Why are you making things so complicated?" she claims he said in reply.

Eight months after they met, she started receiving emails from Kin's account from individuals claiming to be Kin's girlfriend or boyfriend.

"I am Kin's boyfriend. Nice to meet you, too," read one email. "I have been his boyfriend for over 20 years. Kin has ruined my life with his cheating and lies. I punish myself with adding a tattoo to my body every time Kin cheats on me."

When Hannah flagged the emails with Kin, he told her that he had been 'hacked'.

In late 2017, after Hannah had been working abroad in Sri Lanka and fallen ill, Kin re-entered her life. By December of that year, he invited her on a trip to Miami. It was during this trip that things took a darker turn.

Kin's phone started receiving strange messages in seemingly another hacking attempt. According to Kin, the hackers were pretending to be his family demanding money. At the same time, Hannah began receiving messages claiming to be from Kin's long-term girlfriend.

An argument ensued where Kin became 'aggressive' and Hannah felt unsafe, eventually leaving for another hotel with her brother's help.

Kin would later claim that he started the fight with Hannah so that the hackers would stop targeting her as they would believe they were no longer close. Kin stated, "The truth is that I couldn't bear seeing you so scared with the hackers targeting you. Hence, I sabotage intentionally," he messaged.

After getting a flight home, Hannah believed this was the end of the hacking saga. In reality, it was just the beginning.

Upon her return to London, Hannah received a chilling email that read: "Dear Miss Mossman Moore, we will now take control of your online reputation."

This marked the beginning of relentless online harassment, including abusive emails, silent phone calls, and the creation of fake online profiles impersonating her. The emails contained accurate personal details about Hannah and her family, causing her immense fear and isolation.

This former social butterfly quickly became a social recluse, losing friendships as a consequence.

"I'm scared to leave the house. Scared to open my phone. Afraid of what I'll see," Hannah admitted.

After Hannah returned to Sri Lanka and started dating someone new, the emails became more sexually explicit and threatening.

"Stalking you has its benefits," read one email.

"I have seen your tits so many times in the recording. You are late 20s now? Declining youth and saggy boobs… Have you left Sri Lanka or just hiding from me? Tell me please. I will come and get you. Ciao."

As the threats escalated, Hannah reported the situation to the police in March 2018, but she found that they did not immediately recognise it as stalking. One officer even initially joked that he thought she was 'crazy'.

The police's inquiries led nowhere due to insufficient evidence and the case was closed. "They say there's not enough evidence to prove who's behind it," Hannah said.

"I was back on my own. Except I wasn't alone."

In a statement to the podcast, the Metropolitan Police acknowledged that "the service the victim received between 2018 and 2020 fell short of what's expected" and that they were working to improve their response to stalking claims.

Desperate for answers, Hannah started working with Carol for the Stalked podcast. It was during this investigation that a forensic linguist Dr Robert Leonard found that the anonymous emails and Kin's known emails had striking similarities, leading experts to suggest "common authorship".

These similarities included: unusual grammatical structures, pluralised single words, uncommon abbreviations, and specific phrasing and engrams (aka strings of words that were almost identical). For example, the phrase "shall without further reference to you" appeared in both Kin's emails and the anonymous 'online reputation management' emails.

Another piece of evidence linking the anonymous hacker to Kin was found in the IP addresses of some anonymous emails. Data expert Jonathan Sabir found that the IP addresses of some anonymous emails, particularly those from the online reputation management services sent in 2018, originated from Hong Kong, the same location Kin claimed to be from.

The podcast went on to investigate Kin background, discovering there were many inconsistencies in his story.

Despite presenting himself as a successful international fashion buyer, there was little concrete evidence to support this. Kin's claims of owning one of the richest homes in Hong Kong would suggest he's a billionaire, yet he has no traceable public profile.

Then there was the issue of Claire, who was introduced as Kin's executive assistant. She was involved in managing Kin's schedule, such as rescheduling lunch meetings and informing Hannah about Kin's plans. According to Dr Sabir, Claire and Kin were likely the same person.

Stalked reached out to Kin regarding their allegations. "Through his lawyers, Kin rejects the claims made against him in this series in their entirety. He says they are completely false and without any foundation," the podcast stated.

Regarding the anonymous emails, Kin "denies this and adamantly denies ever stalking or harassing Hannah."
