A nine-year-old boy is in a critical condition after being hit by an alleged drunk driver while walking with his family at Springwood, south of Brisbane, last night.
Police said the boy was walking with his family at about 7:20pm when a car driven by a 24-year-old man hit him after crashing into a parked car.
It then crashed into a house, causing substantial damage to the right-hand side.
Senior Sergeant Robin Taylor-Ward said it appeared that the driver had lost control of the car.
“It appears that a car had been attempting to turn right into Rholanda crescent [and], for some reason, the driver has failed to make that turn, hitting the parked car and then the young boy,” she said.
The boy’s family provided first aid until paramedics arrived to take him to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, police said.
Senior Sergeant Tony Jackson said the driver was assisting police with their inquiries.
“At this time of year just remember fatigue, drink driving, seat belts and the use of mobile phones, just consider all safety in relation to the driving of within the streets of suburban areas,” he said.
