The 3 jackets everyone will be wearing this spring.

Spring and summer fashion is all I'm thinking about right now.

The urge to get your shoulders and toes out is strong, but before you run hard at your summer style, consider a transseasonal spring jacket.

It's not yet warm enough in many parts of Australia to leave the house without a jacket, but the time for winter coats and knits is (nearly) over.

Watch: A fashion expert unpacks spring's top style trends! Post continues below.

The best jackets to shop for spring.

An oversized blazer has been the go-to outerwear option for what feels like years now, but all signs are pointing to the next shape that's set to take over our wardrobes.

It's shorter, it's more streamlined, and it's everywhere on your socials right now.

"Suddenly a short, cropped jacket looks fresh and feels new," explains Sydney-based stylist and fashion editor Fifi Milne.

Don't get us wrong — blazers still have a place in our closets and will never not be useful. But with a new season upon us, now is the perfect time to experiment with different trends.

So while you're spring-cleaning your wardrobe, make some room for these three styles that'll update your look in a second.

1. The barn shacket.

If you loved the barn jacket trend for autumn, meet the spring version: a cropped utility shacket in denim or cord.

The style makes a lot of sense for our climate and laid-back lifestyle, lending a bit of casual polish to your look without compromising on practicality. It works with everything from high-waisted jeans to midi skirts.

Aussie brands are all over this trend and producing some great accessible options. You'll get the most mileage out of a neutral colour like khaki, cream or tan — but an animal print is the maximalist way to do this trend.

2. The collared jacket.

For a slightly dressier vibe, look to a collared jacket with a streamlined cut. An instant outfit upgrade, this silhouette feels more grown-up and chic than a bomber, but gives the same effortless effect (only minus the bulk.)

"A short crop jacket loves flared skirts, high-waisted pants and baggy jeans," Fifi says.

"It gives definition — you can see your waist, and it gives good shape."

You can wear one to work with tailored trousers, or deploy it to dress up your denim. I've been wearing mine with a tank top and barrel-leg jeans for nights out.

3. The sporty shell.

Right now we're seeing jackets that take inspiration from technical outerwear pieces working their way into our casual wardrobes.

You might've seen that viral Uniqlo windbreaker doing the rounds online, and there's a reason it's so popular - the sporty silhouette is incredibly versatile and works for any season (it is waterproof, after all.)

This style comes in handy on those off-duty days when you just want to throw on leggings and feel somewhat put-together, but you don't have to stick to activewear — try teaming one with a lace skirt for a cool contrast.
