I’d like to take this moment to thank the Fashion Gods for bringing glasses back into fashion.
I only wish glasses were as fashionable when I was in high school as they are now.
You remember that girl in your Year 7 English class with the braces and the glasses? That was me. Braces AND glasses.
Parties sucked. Ski trips were a nightmare (imagine wearing glasses under goggles) and there was no such thing as a prescription sunglass that didn’t look like it was plucked from the shelf of my grandparents’ house.
Nothing I wore matched the bright blue aqua frames I chose from the ‘teenage’ section at the optometrist – except the books I was carrying around in my library bag.
Man, it was tough.
But fortunately – for me anyway – things have changed in recent years. Glasses are cool, prescription sunnies suddenly aren’t restricted to the fold up-fold down variety, and I’m kissing the pages of my fashion magazines to celebrate.
A couple of years ago, a friend of mine walked into a party wearing a pair of kick-ass thick-rimmed frames that made everyone stop and stare.
‘
When she walked up to say hello, my first question to her was not “how are you?” (which it should have been) but rather “where do I get those glasses?” (because that’s what was really what I cared about.)
The answer? Specsavers.
The next day I took myself to the closest store and promptly bought the same pair. In two different colours. And the best part? They were so well priced they should have been free.
