Who is Sophie Delezio?

Born on April 3, 2001, Sophie first captured the nation's attention when she was just two and a half years old. While napping at her childcare centre in December 2003, a car crashed through the building, trapping her under the burning vehicle.

The accident left Sophie with third-degree burns to 85 per cent of her body. She lost both her legs below the knee, her right hand, and her right ear. The toddler spent six and a half months in hospital undergoing extensive surgeries and rehabilitation, relearning basic skills most of us take for granted.

But Sophie's challenges weren't over. In May 2006, at just five years old, she was struck by a car as her nanny pushed her wheelchair across a pedestrian crossing. The impact threw her 18 metres, causing critical injuries including multiple fractures, a brain injury, and a heart attack. She spent another two months in hospital before returning home to continue her recovery.

Despite these unimaginable setbacks, Sophie's spirit remained unbreakable. Her family established the Day of Difference Foundation to support families dealing with severe trauma, and Sophie herself became a powerful symbol of hope for Australians everywhere.

As she told Woman's Day in an interview: "In my mind, I'm not 'Sophie the girl with no legs' but someone completely normal. I think of myself as Sophie the chatterbox, the socialite, the girl who loves a good hamburger and enjoys each day as much as she can."

How did Sophie Delezio and husband Joseph Salerno meet?

Sophie's love story with Joseph Salerno is the stuff of romantic movies — childhood friends who found their way to each other.

Their story began when they were just six years old, swimming on the same team. Joseph admitted being fascinated by Sophie even then, but their paths would cross again years later when Sophie moved to Oxford Falls Grammar School on Sydney's Northern Beaches during Year 9.

Joseph was already attending the school, and the pair met properly in drama class. They quickly became the best of friends, spending afternoons together and even attending their Year 10 formal as each other's dates — though at that point, things were strictly platonic.

The turning point came after Sophie spent a year studying in London in 2020. When she returned to Sydney, Joseph realised just how much he'd missed her.

"It was around two weeks after she had come home, we were hanging out a lot and I remember it was one night I was cooking her pasta and I thought to myself, 'Hang on, I think I feel something here,'" Joseph told Woman's Day.

His confession of feelings came during a casual dinner, in the most adorable way possible.

"I told her, 'Hey, I have something to tell you. I kind of have feelings for this person,' and she said, 'Oh really, who?' and I got out my phone and got up a photo of her and showed it to her. I had never seen her laugh like that, I thought she was laughing at me!"

Sophie's response?

"I awkward-laugh a lot when I don't know what to say or do. I was so shocked, I had no clue," she said. "But I knew I had felt something for him and I've always wanted him in my life. He's my best friend."

As Sophie later reflected, "Everyone's dream is to fall in love with their best friend. It's something you often only see in the movies."

The proposal.

When Joseph proposed to Sophie on Valentine's Day in 2023, it was a moment overflowing with emotion.

The romantic setup had all the classic elements — candles, rose petals, and of course, a diamond ring. Sophie initially thought it was just a sweet Valentine's gesture for a cosy night of pizza and movies.

But when Joseph dropped to one knee, she was completely caught off guard.

Both Sophie and Joseph were overwhelmed with emotion. Sophie admitted to being overcome with tears, and Joseph, seeing her reaction, also began crying and trembling as they embraced the joy of their engagement.

Writing for Mamamia after her engagement, Sophie shared: "We have both been tested by life and challenged in so many ways. We haven't always been directly in each other's lives, but somehow fate has always brought us back together."

"The difficult times we have been through make us both so keen to hold on to the love and joy, as we know how important it is. Calling him my fiancé is the world's greatest honour," she continued.

Welcoming their first child.

The couple's joy multiplied when Sophie discovered she was pregnant in early 2024.

She shared the exciting news on Instagram on April 3, her 23rd birthday, posting photos of her baby bump and a sonogram with the caption: "The greatest gift of all coming in September!"

Throughout her pregnancy, Sophie kept her followers updated with her journey.

At 22 weeks, she shared a touching reflection: "My gosh, what a journey it has been until now. This little bundle is moving around so much and definitely keeping their mama awake at night."

"To feel the movement inside is a feeling of pure love and joy. It is a feeling that I will forever treasure," she wrote.

In May 2024, the couple revealed they were expecting a baby boy, sharing a video of blue confetti exploding at their gender reveal party. Joseph was seen skipping with joy at the news of his little boy on the way!

Sophie and Joseph welcomed their son Frankie in September 2024, with Sophie announcing the birth on Instagram: "Welcome to the world, Frankie. Our hearts are so full."
