'The $26 beauty product saving my mid-life skin.'

I admit I am a skincare junkie.

If I read about a savey product Leigh Campbell really loves, for example, I will buy it.

If I see something in a newsletter about a dupe, I'm there.

If I get a whiff of a new spendy product with an ingredient in it people are raving about, I rave too.

I'm also a lifestyle writer so am often surrounded by new products. It's an issue. And as I get older — I am now 56 — that kind of behaviour isn't always for the good of my skin.

So, I've been keeping a list of all the products I'm using that ACTUALLY do work for my midlife, menopausal, slightly-dehydrated, Botox-dewrinkled, a-bit-crepey-in-places skin, and I'm hoping that anyone of my age reading this may feel inspired to try them too.

The best skincare products for midlife women.

Revolution Pro Miracle Night Rescue Serum Advanced Complex, $26.

Revolution Pro Miracle Night Rescue Serum Advanced Complex, $26, is similar to the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair yet costs a fraction of the price (which I guess is the whole point). I don't bother with the little dropper thing, I just shake some into my hand and press them into damp skin before my moisturiser in the evening before bed.

It's full of ceramides and peptides and hyaluronic acid, which really gives me some plumpness overnight. Delicious-smelling too.

Trinny London Niacinamide Moisturise Energise Me, $79 and Intense Peptide Moisturiser Bounce Back, $102.

These two moisturisers are my daytime saviours and though Trinny Woodall is quite exxy, I can't do without them or her midlife wisdom. I mix them together — which no one told me to do, I just liked the consistency when I did that.

The Bounce Back is thick and creamy and as Trinny says, like a nurturing hug, and the Energise Me is lightweight and powered by skin-boosting niacinamide. People comment on my skin when I have been religious about using them. End of story.

Essano Visible Repair Facial Elixir, $49.99.

I use Visible Repair Facial Elixir, made for middle-aged faces, under my daytime moisturiser and I find it gives me such a glow. Also, when I don't use it, I notice.

It's got bakuchiol in it, which is a natural alternative to retinol, and also something magical they call Lapagyl which is an extract of lapacho bark, a tree known as the 'tree of life', and who isn't into that?

Ipsum Best Skin Nourishing Face Oil, $52.

I think this oil is also Holly Wainwright's favourite, and no wonder. It's heaven in a bottle. Smells divine, calms things down (I can get a bit red and sensitive… which is fun), soothe any signs of irritation, and gives my skin some balance — while also helping to sort out dullness and dryness.

I pop a few drops on at night — when I'm not using the Revolution Serum as I can only manage one skincare pairing at a time.

Metamorphosis Cool & Calm Hot Flush Cooling & Relaxing Mist, $49.

Hot flushes be gone with this handy Vanessa Megan Metamorphosis Cool & Calm Hot Flush Cooling & Relaxing Mist.

The blend of essential oils in this little bottle gives a cooling sensation, which helps relieve some of those hot flush symptoms — great for the office if you're in meetings and you come over all sweaty.

And by you, I mean me. I have one in my handbag at all times and one in the work fridge in a lunchbag. Genius.

Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream, $76.

Skin Smoothing cream by Dermalogica has been my go-to-night time moisturiser for a while. It's rich but not TOO rich, so it doesn't feel like you're making your skin all… goopy. It means I wake up with a glow and it works wonders for environmental stress with heaps of antioxidant action and hydration. It's not specifically for older skin, but it does help with fine lines and dullness.

Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque, $109.

I can't tell you the number of times I have bought a tube of this mask. Hundreds of times at least. It's great for dullness and dehydration (those are two words we all associate with middle age, right?)

It's rich and thick and delicious and leaves my skin so soft. It has vitamins A, C and E, and something called linoleic acid to help restore skin that is showing signs of damage and ageing while also strengthening the skin barrier. It also helps nourish, soften and protect. It's a skin superhero.

The Ordinary Squalane + Amino Acids Lip Balm, $16.30.

This is a newish product by The Ordinary and I pop it in my handbag for application during the day.

A blend of amino acids in this tiny little bottle help keep moisture in my lips — which are like the Sahara most days, but you can also dab it on elbows and cuticles to keep them soft and supple.

Oh, remember supple skin? Wasn't it lovely?

La Roche Posay Redermic R Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream, $49.95.

I love La Roche Posay — I'm a sucker for French skincare generally — and this little tube is a bit of a favourite for my eyes. It contains a slow-release retinol to visibly smooth skin around the eye area, and caffeine which works to lift things. It also helps with dark circles (brought about by not sleeping, which is brought about by anxiety and night sweats… etc).

The Ordinary High-Spreadability Fluid Primer, $15.80.

Though not strictly skincare and not strictly aimed at mid-lifers, this is the best primer I have ever used, and it's $15.80. Enough said.

Stops things sliding off by lunchtime.
