More human remains found in Melbourne river - with distinctive tattoo.

A member of the public has found more human remains in the Maribyrnong River, in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Police said the man found the body parts near Oakland Street, Maribyrnong, just before 11:30am (AEST).

The water police are continuing their search after a number of body parts were found on Thursday and Friday.

A passer-by found a forearm floating in the river at Moonee Ponds on Friday afternoon and police found a second limb and a bag with remains in the water two kilometres away on Thursday.

One arm had a distinctive tattoo of a devil holding a three-pronged pitchfork in its left hand and what appears to be an aerosol can in its right.

The body parts are being examined by forensic pathologists.

Police said they were treating the discovery of the body, believed to be that of a man, as suspicious.

Missing person records have been scoured by police in a bid to identify two human limbs and what is believed to be a bag of flesh found floating in the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne’s north-west.

A passer-by found an arm, from shoulder to wrist, floating in the river at Moonee Ponds yesterday afternoon, sparking a large-scale police search of the area.

Police later found a second limb in the water two kilometres away as well as a bag believed to be full of flesh.

Officers spent the night searching around the river and police divers are expected to return to the site this morning.

The body parts are being examined by forensic pathologists.

“It was really deemed to be suspicious when a second body part was found,” Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said.

“I’m not sure exactly what part that is, we do know it’s a limb but certainly seeing we’ve seen a second body part, we do believe it’s suspicious.”

Detective Bailey said police were unsure who the body parts belonged to and how long they had been in the river.

“The examination that’ll be conducted by the pathologists we are hopeful will assist in that regard,” he said.

“We’ve looked through missing persons records and there’s nothing obvious to us at this point in time.”
