"As a beauty editor, I'm ashamed to say this, but there's only one nail trend I'll ever try."

I’m just going to put this out there: short nails are the best. It doesn’t matter what’s trending in the world of nails I’ll always stick to my short, stumpy nail look and I love it.

Part of me feels a bit guilty for admitting this. I feel like there’s the stereotypical image that a beauty editor should maintain: long talons, bedazzled with the latest nail art trends. (Post continues after video.)

But the truth is that I love having short nails. Why? Because it feels clean, neat and I can actually do my job. If my nails extend even just the slightest bit over my fingertips, typing starts to feel so annoying and uncomfortable.

And without typing, what I am supposed to do at work? Sit around trying on lipsticks? (Okay, I do that too, but I swear, I write about it afterwards!)

Recently, I grew out my nails a tiny bit for a story on sheer nail polish. As soon as I finished photographing my nails for that story, I went home and removed the nail polish (even though it was Dior!) and cut my nails.

Having nails even the slightest bit longer than usual was enough to drive me crazy.

But, like any time a woman chooses to buck the accepted beauty norm, it’s never just about the aesthetics. I reject the idea that, in order to be “feminine”, a woman must have long, incapacitating nails. (Post continues after gallery.)

Just like high heels, long nails can be uncomfortable, impractical and sometimes even painful. Being a woman shouldn’t have to require so much effort and discomfort.

But you know what? As much as I love short nails, I also love that we can groom our nails in whatever way we choose.
