'Trust me, this piece is the unsung hero of your autumn wardrobe.'

I'm wearing it right now, as I write this article.

I wore it on the weekend, for coffee with friends, and I'll probably wear it again tomorrow for a day of parks and playdates with my toddler. That's how much I love my new wardrobe addition.

It works for so many scenarios and occasions, I actually can't envision an outfit this piece wouldn't work with.

I'm talking about a knitted shacket. Shacket, of course, being a cute hybrid of "shirt" and "jacket".

For years I've relied on shackets in different textures like denim, cord and flannel as an essential layering piece in my wardrobe. I think we all have. But the knitted version is the upgrade to know about now. It's got all the same features of a denim one, like a collar, pockets and buttons - only it's soft and slouchy.

I first came across the knit shacket at a local café, where I saw a woman wearing one in a beige colour with her yoga tights and sneakers. I loved the look of her lightweight jacket so much I almost tapped her on the shoulder to ask about it — but I let the opportunity pass.

Later that night I was thinking about the jacket and kicking myself for not just plucking up the courage to ask her. So I posted about it on Instagram, asking my followers if they'd seen one matching its description. They worked fast, quickly tracking down the exact style — the Remy Shirt Oversized Jacket from Arcaa Movement.

It happened to be on sale, so I bought it that very instant and eagerly awaited its delivery.

Since then, I've basically lived in my shacket. It's so comfortable, goes with everything, and truly feels like the missing piece in my year-round wardrobe.

But it's especially handy for these crisp autumn days where the mornings are cooler — I've been wearing it buttoned up as a shirt, then layering it throughout the day with tees and tanks underneath. It's basically a sweater moonlighting as a jacket.

Yes, I've written 300 words about a knitted jacket and I could go on. I really could! But you want to get to the shopping, that's fair.

Below I've found a few luxe versions that are really worth investing in, as well as budget finds that will fill the gap in your new season wardrobe. I love an oversized fit, but a cropped option like Target's is perfect for teaming with high-waisted trousers or jeans.

Happy layering!
