One dead two injured: What we know about the shooting in Melbourne CBD.

With AAP.

A crowd of thousands who had gathered for a boxing tournament at Melbourne Pavillion on Friday night scattered from the building, after a man was shot dead on the pavement outside.

Heavily armed Victorian Police swarmed to the area shortly after 10pm after witnesses heard multiple shots outside the venue on Racecourse Road, Kensington, a suburb near the city’s CBD.

It’s believed the gunman opened fire in a targeted attack, before fleeing on foot.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were found with gunshot wounds. The area was placed into lockdown, with surrounding roads blocked and trams stopped.

Homicide squad Detective Sergeant Sol Solomon said the three victims were not related to each other, but confirmed they were “known to police”.

“I have no information as to the motive of the shooting or whether it was gang-related or otherwise,” he told reporters on Saturday.

He said the venue was “packed to capacity” and that police didn’t believe there was any further risk to public safety.

No arrests have been made.

Detectives are speaking to witnesses and appealed for anyone with vision to upload it to the Victoria Police website.
