Pointed lyrics and a... witch: All the drama surrounding Shakira's post-divorce 'revenge' song.

In less than a week, Shakira has amassed over 114 million views with her brand new single. The success is because it's a great song, for sure, but also because the lyrics tear her ex-husband to absolute shreds. 

The song was recorded with Bizarrap, an Argentinian DJ and producer, and includes lyrics that share Shakira's version of events regarding the breakdown and divorce between her and her ex-husband Gerard Piqué.

Piqué played football for Barcelona, Manchester United and the Spanish national team before the pair split in 2022 following more than a decade together. During their time together, they had two children; nine-year-old Milan and seven-year-old Sasha.

Shakira calls out Piqué's new relationship with Clara Chía. 

The Waka Waka singer sang openly about her disdain for Chía, who is 23 years old and recently started dating her ex-husband.

In the song, the lyrics read; "I wish you good luck with my supposed replacement, I don't even know what happened to you."

She added, "I'm worth two of 22 [year old], You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo, You traded a Rolex for a Casio."

In response, Piqué decided to add to the conversation with a pointed action – buying a Twingo and driving it into work the day after the song release.

Shakira went on to advise Piqué in her lyrics to "slow down" and says he is doing "a lot of exercises" but needs to "work the brain a little too" in her.

Shakira refused to make any comment about either Chía or Piqué until she gained full custody of their two children – only afterwards did she decide to drop this song.  

Her children, Milan and Sasha, will live with her in Miami, but the judge ruled Piqué would be able to visit anytime he liked.

She blames Piqué for the breakdown of their relationship. 

After making her feelings clear about Piqué's new relationship, she also told fans through the song it was because of him that their relationship failed.

In one line, she says, "You thought you hurt me, but you made me stronger".

The singer later adds she's not responsible for any negative criticism from the media or fans by singing: "I understood that it’s not my fault that they criticise you; I only make music, sorry that it splashed you."

Shakira hints at a breakdown with the rest of Piqué's family.

She goes on to add: "Women don’t cry anymore, they cash in."

The lyric is thought to be in reference to rumours that Shakira is breaking ties with her father-in-law, Joan Piqué, and his company Kosmos. 

According to reports, the singer helped him sign various sponsorship deals and helped him land several investments with her star power. 

It is believed she is currently in the works of cutting off all ties with the Piqué family.

Shakira airs her dislike for her mother-in-law. 

Not only did the singer make reference to her ex-husband and his new girlfriend, but she also made public that she's not a big fan of her former mother-in-law; Montserrat Bernabéu. 

Aside from blaring her song at all hours of the day (Bernabéu is the singer's neighbour), Shakira even placed a figure of a witch on her balcony that directly faces the home of Piqué's mother, a well-known doctor.

While the singer used to affectionately refer to Bernabéu as "my little mother-in-law," reports say their relationship soured following the pair's divorce. It's also alleged Shakira was infuriated by her former parents-in-law, who welcomed Piqué’s new girlfriend with open arms. 

Her lyrics read: "You left me with my mother-in-law as a neighbour, with the press at my door and a debt to the taxman."

She aired dirt about her debt too.

Along with the rest of her dirty laundry, the Hips Don't Lie singer talked about her alleged tax fraud totalling AU $22.5 million across six tax crimes. 

The charges relate to a time between 2012 and 2014 when the singer said she lived in the Bahamas and was not qualified as a Spanish resident for tax purposes. From 2015 onwards, she lived with Piqué in Barcelona.

Shakira has repeatedly claimed that she has done nothing wrong in relation to her tax affairs in Spain.

The singer is set to go to trial and said in a statement: "The prosecutor’s office has resorted to wrongful means to apply pressure – just as they do daily and unjustly with thousands of taxpayers for profit."

"I’m confident that I have enough proof to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favour."
