Home And Away star Christie Hayes on sex after birth: "It was something I didn't expect."

For most women, having sex soon after giving birth is the last thing on their mind. There’s sleepless nights, dirty nappies, leaking boobs – it doesn’t exactly scream ‘sexy time’.

And then there are other women, like Christie Hayes, who can’t wait to get back on the horse.

Christie gets real about her sex drive after the birth of her first child, on our podcast for imperfect parents. Post continues after.

The 31-year-old former Home and Away star fell pregnant just six weeks after welcoming her first son, Hendrix, three. Eleven months later, she gave birth to Harley, two.

Christie says she found the whole discovery of being pregnant again so soon after giving birth “shocking”.

“It was something I didn’t expect. I didn’t even think your body could think about carrying another baby so soon,” she said on Mamamia’s parenting podcast This Glorious Mess.

“It felt like my body was still pregnant from the previous pregnancy that happened.”

And while she was ready to have sex almost immediately after giving birth, she says a lot of other women don’t feel the same way.

It had been a long drought for Christie, who says she didn’t even think about sex the whole time she was pregnant.

“Nine months to go without sex is quite a long time, particularly when you don’t have children. When you have children, nine months is not a big deal,” she explained.

“But I missed my husband, and we were kind of missing one another, and in the midst of having a newborn baby and all the fog and all the haze, to find that five minutes together was a really welcome change.”

And while it can take some women a long time to feel comfortable in their post-baby body, Christie says she was just happy not to be a vessel for another human being.

“My body, in terms of it not having a baby in it anymore, and actually being mine again, it was a nice, sexy feeling,” she said.

“Life doesn’t have to be perfect for it to be wonderful.”

Ultimately, every woman is different though, and while she didn’t feel like sex during her pregnancies, plenty of others do.

“A lot of women want it when they are pregnant. You hear stories of women feeling horny as hell, and they’re nine months pregnant with a massive gut and they can’t get enough of it,” she said.

“I just wasn’t one of those people. I love hearing stories of women who were. I think it’s really liberating, and I think it’s beautiful. I don’t think there’s anything yucky about it… For me personally, I just didn’t feel like it. It wasn’t the thing for me.”
