'I tried the powder eyelash curler hack and it's even better than falsies.'

Mamamia's Tried and Tested series is your review of the latest to hit our desks in beauty, health and wellbeing. You won't find any #sponsored content here, just honest, relatable and independent advice. This week, Mamamia's Beauty Editor trials the powder eyelash curler hack.

If there's a thing you need to know about me, it's that one of my biggest pet (makeup) peeves is diligently using an eyelash curler and mascara only for my lashes to drop after, like, five minutes. It's the WORST. Gives you a false sense of hope that your lashes are going to look g-damn amazing that day.

It always reminds me how good eyelash extensions were, but also ultimately, how broken they left my lashes and… the lash serum! I really need to be more consistent with the lash serum.

In any case, sometimes eyelash curlers and a really good mascara can only do so much, you know?

For this reason (and definitely not because I was doomscrolling at 1am), I was searching for ways to make curled lashes last and came across this TikTok from content creator Rose Siard (known as @RoseandBen) where she uses setting powder to curl her lashes.

And goodness, the results look wild. Best hack I've seen in yonks.

So, I decided to give it a whirl for myself. If you're wondering how to make curled lashes last longer, take a walk with me.

How to use setting powder for long-lasting lashes.

If you're confused as to why we're now applying setting powder to our lashes (fair!) and what's actually involved in the process, let me give you a quick rundown.

Basically, Siard starts by applying some setting powder to her lashes (with an eyeshadow brush) before curling them with a lash curler. She then applies mascara right after, before adding more setting powder to her eyelash curler and curling them again.

She said to think of the technique like greasing a baking sheet — the powder is meant to set the lash and give it lasting hold when you add mascara on top.

And honestly, the results speak for themselves — her lashes look so good.

What happened when you tried the powder eyelash curler hack?

I tried Rose Siard's viral TikTok beauty hack before going out for dinner and recorded the whole thing (so you can watch it on You Beauty YouTube, of course).

Following the TikTok instructions, I used an eyeshadow brush and lightly dusted my lashes with a setting powder (I used Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder, $73) before curling them for around 20 seconds with Manicare Tools Eyelash Curler With Comb, $17.99.

Still following along with the video, I then applied mascara (I used the Tower 28 Mascara, $33) and made sure to coat every lash.

I then pulled out the setting powder again, and applied it to the sponge-y part of the eyelash curler — now, this is supposed to be the key.

I curled my lashes again — and surprisingly they didn't feel heavy or weird!

I did this on my right side and did my left side normally with a separate curler, so there were no traces of setting powder — because I wanted to compare!

And you guys, it works.

Here's what it looks like with my normal lash routine on the left, and the setting powder hack on the right (please excuse the extreme close-up):

In my opinion, the side where I'm wearing setting powder (right) looks so much better. They not only look like they're holding a curl better, but also more voluminous and lengthy.

I loved this hack so much I used it on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve! Can't get enough of it! Telling every beauty girl and her pet lizard!

The verdict.

In case you're skimming and didn't read the above (ouch), it works — and yeah, the results are good.

I love it when we have a success story!

I'll probably use this hack whenever I'm going out somewhere or just want to give my lashes an extra bit of oomph without dipping into spendy treatments that sometimes leave my lashes looking a little worse for wear.

The best bit? It might sound like there are lots of steps involved, but it's actually super quick — and the long-lasting curl is worth it.
