I’ve always loved a romantic comedy.
I grew up on the greats of the 1980s and 1990s – Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, Notting Hill and Serendipity.
I used to devour them. They were like comfort food for me, a tiny shot of happiness to remind me that sometimes – just sometimes – there’s a little magic in the world.
But then slowly rom-coms became a thing of the past.
They dwindled until they were almost extinct.
Finding a good rom-com these days is akin to finding a unicorn who will do a Maccas run for you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
I was starting to think I’d never stumble on another good rom-com, or a Maccas-fetching unicorn, but then I found Netflix’s Set It Up.
The Netflix original movie is packed with rom-com-y goodness.
Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) are two young, overworked assistants who run around New York City trying to keep up with the crazy demands of their bosses.
Harper’s boss (Lucy Liu) is a sharp-tongued sports reporter, who ventures out of her office intermittently, to give Harper vague orders like “Order me that thing I like from the place with the gay waiter, the closeted one” and “I’m taking a nap, wake me up at midnight, but don’t startle me, play me a lullaby that slowly increases volume”.
