Why is everyone talking about Serena Williams' eyebrows?

In case you missed it over the weekend, Serena Williams won the Australian Open. Again. Actually, she won it for the 6th time. (You can read more about that here…)

Which is pretty impressive, wouldn’t you say?

Despite being sick, Williams showed the world exactly why she holds the world number one ranking with an impressive 6-3 7-6 match against her Russian opponent, Maria Sharapova.

This is what Kim Kardashian looks like with no eyebrows.

But while some people were watching the tennis, a whole bunch more were watching Serena’s eyebrows.

These were Serena’s brows when she took to the court at the Australian open in 2012.

And this is the 2015 Australian Open.

Since Saturday, many many women were celebrating the win - but also talking about whether Serena has filled in her brows or whether she has committed to something more long term, such as permanent cosmetic tattoos.

Strong brows have come into their own in recent years (thanks to celebrities like Cara 'brows' Delevigne) and it's a look that's a far cry from the over plucked straight lines of the 1990s. Well groomed brows have the ability to lift the face, frame the eyes and make you look more polished, so it's little wonder more and more people like Serena are getting involved.

How to achieve natural looking eyebrows

The first step is to see a professional.

Having your eyebrows professionally shaped every 6-8 weeks will mean that grooming them in the mornings will be a whole lot easier. Win! Then you'll be able to clean up any random sprouts that may grow through without ruining the shape before your next appointment. If your eyebrows are especially light, consider a natural looking tint which will make them appear much fuller.

How to find the right eyebrow shape for your face.

The second step is to choose your weapon.

Which product you choose for your eyebrows will depend on your confidence with application and the look that you're going for. For some reason, so many brow products have a warm tinge to them which screams "fake!! For the most natural look, go for something which has taupe or khaki undertones.

Brow Gel

These products contain tiny little fibres in them which attach to your natural brow hair, leaving you with thicker but very natural brows. They are super easy to apply and help tame any straw hairs in the process. Perfect for those days when you only have five minutes to get out the door.

Powder

Using a powder to fill in any sparse areas is a great way to achieve natural looking brows. My tip would be to ignore most brow powders all together and go straight for a highly pigmented eyeshadow. You've got much more choice in terms of colour so you're going to be able to find the most natural looking shade.

Highly pigmented eyeshadows have good staying power so your brows will still be on your face at the end of the day.

Pencils/Crayons

Pencils are great for filling in over plucked brows and they give you heaps of control as to where you put the product. They're a lot easier to manoeuvre, especially for novices.  The tip is to apply the pencil lightly in feathery motions rather than drawing an eyebrow on. This will mimic the look of real hair.

I personally love Rimmel's Brow Pencil in 'Hazel,' as well as Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil which is an angled cream based formula. It's super easy to apply and lasts really well.

Pomades
