White House press secretary Sean Spicer has resigned.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer has resigned, reportedly over the hiring of a new communications director.

On Friday, President Donald Trump picked Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci, a long-time supporter, to be his White House communications director, a White House official said.

Various media reported that the new hire sparked the resignation of Spicer, one of the major faces of the Trump administration.

Spicer had been serving a dual role as press secretary and communications director since May when Michael Dubke (the former communications director) resigned.

Scaramucci, who currently works at the Export-Import Bank, is expected to start his new job in August, White House official Sarah Sanders told media.

The appointment comes as the White House deals with questions around a special counsel probe, as well as several congressional investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and potential collusion with Trump's campaign.

Sanders said that the new hire didn’t signal other changes in the administration.

Scaramucci, a Republican fundraiser and founder of Skybridge Capital, was earlier offered the post of US ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris.

It's reported he was interviewed by Trump on Friday morning and that the job was then offered and accepted.
