1. Bali Nine’s Scott Rush is getting married

Convicted drug courier and Bali Nine member Scott Rush is reportedly getting married to a woman he met one week before he was arresting in 2005.

28-year-old Rush – who is currently serving a life sentence in a Bali prison –  proposed to London banker Nikki Butler this month.

Rush was just 19 when he was arrested in Bali in 2005 for carrying drugs. Together with the other couriers, the Bali Nine had 8.2kg of heroin strapped to their bodies.

Rush and Butler met in 2005, and spent one day together before he was arrested, Ms Butler returned to London and didn’t hear of Rush again until 2013 when she saw a report about another prisoner in Bali. The Bali Nine were mentioned in the story, which lead Butler to get in contact with Rush.

Butler has since visited three times this year. Ms Butler reportedly has two small children and is in the processed of getting divorced.

2. Christmas Island staff on ‘standby’

An asylum seeker vessel made contact with marine rescue authorities on Thursday night, with the ABC reporting that the vessel is from Southern India and has more than 150 people on board, including 37 children.

The leaking boat is reportedly 300 kilometres from Christmas Island.

Labor MP Alannah MacTiernan has said staff on Christmas Island have been told to prepare for the possible arrival of the asylum seekers.

As Fairfax reported, “No vessel carrying asylum seekers has successfully reached Australian shores since December 19.”

3. NRL player Todd Carney being investigated over lewd photo

The NRL is investigating Cronulla Sharks star Todd Carney after a lewd photo of him was published online on Saturday night. The graphic image appears to show the Sharks player urinating into his own mouth while in the bathroom of popular Sutherland Shire nightspot Northies.

It is the latest incident to tarnish Carney’s career, which has been marred by alcohol-related issues including a drink driving charge in 2006. Carney joined the Sharks in 2012 after being dismissed by the Roosters, after he broke a club-issued alcohol ban.

NRL officials are investigating the matter.

4. Thousands to lose Disability Support Pension

The Federal Government is reportedly set to release a discussion paper that suggest only people with permanent disabilities receive the Disability Support Pension (DSP).

The report states that those with partial or short-term disabilities should instead be given unemployment benefits instead of being eligible for the DSP.

Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen has slammed the idea, telling ABC’s Insiders program he is sick of seeing Mr Andrews ‘demonising’ disabled people.

5. Aussie teen continues with his stellar Wimbledon debut

Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios has beaten Czech Jiri Vesely and will now face number one seed Rafael Nadal at Wimbleton.

Wildcard Kyrgios, 19,  is the youngest in the draw and is the last Australian left standing in the tournament.

Kyrgios will play Nadal on Monday, but has already secured himself a spot in the top 100.

6. England fan’s ear bitten off during the World Cup

Ouch! A fan at the World Cup has bitten off part of an English fan’s ear during England’s match against Uruguay in Sao Paulo on June 19

Officers started an investigation after the fan made a complaint, but the perpetrator has yet to be identified.

7. Medical researchers working on new trials to improve lives of people with spinal cord injuries

The lives of people with quadriplegia could be massively improved thanks to new research from Victoria.

The projects – which include electrically stimulated exercise and a robotic arm that offers independence – could make an astounding difference to people living with spinal injuries.

But their won’t be overnight success – the researchers behind the project have suggested that while there were some exciting breakthroughs, “significant advacnces” take time.

8. Eight year murder mystery to come to a close

A Sydney man has been charged over a fatal stabbing that occered almost eight years ago.

The man who was arrested faced court today.

The body of  51-year-old man Deng Cheng Li, who had been repeatedly stabbed, was found at the back of his take-away shop in Wagga Wagga in September 2006.

Earlier this year, a 28-year-old man was extradited to Australia from Malaysia. Upon arrival, he was charged with seven offences – including murder.
