It's that time of the year again, and parents are planning how to squeeze in all their "must-do" activities with the kids over the school holidays, now that free time and warm weather are in sight.

So, who's ready?

While there's a break from washing uniforms and waking up to an alarm clock, the challenge of finding new and fun things to do every day for weeks can overwhelm the unprepared. Don't panic — we've got some super fun ideas we think you'll love.

Visit a local museum.

Number one on our family's list is a visit or weekly trip to Melbourne's incredible museums.

Without fail, a museum day will provide a school holiday highlight and provide hours of learning, wrapped up in a fun-for-all package. Hands-on and full of wonder for curious kids of all ages, Museums Victoria does it so well.

Every Wednesday 10am to 2pm is Dino Day for the little ones at Melbourne Museum, with dino dress-ups, discos and an adventurous storytime.

Get a daily glow-up at Scienceworks with The Glow Show in the Lightning Theatre, where you'll learn about the science behind luminosity and how glow effects are created. It's 30 minutes of live science and saves you the mess of the good old Coke and Mentos experiment at home.

If you're looking for something for all ages, join a Joy Tour at the Immigration Museum. Led by expert guides, this tour celebrates joy, colour and connection as you explore the museum's rich history through immersive spaces and interactive installations.

It's almost a #mumhack, but a Museums Victoria membership gets you free general entry to Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and the Immigration Museum all year round, so you can visit as often as you like. Starting at $99 for two adults and up to four kids, it really is the gift that keeps on giving. We manage to find something new on each visit, there's so much to see.

In addition to being able to wander into these marvellous venues as often as you like, the membership gives you access to special openings and exclusive events.

Member exclusive events coming up include Pilates in Antopia and also Making Sense of Notre-dame, an introductory talk by Professor Peter McPhee on why the famed cathedral matters so much to France and to the millions who visit every year.

Go rockpool hopping.

Rockpool hopping is a fave pastime of ours, it's incredible what you can find when you take a good look at the world under water once the tide is low.

Pack the sunscreen, a beach cricket set and head to the coast or bay where the sand is under your feet and the water is refereshingly cool. BYO lunch or grab some fish and chips to share with the seagulls.

Indoor swim centres are another option if the beach is a bit of a drive — many have water play activities for a wide range of ages, even the teeny tiny.

Head to the local library.

They're in almost every neighbourhood but are often overlooked. The library is a place where we can easily lose track of time. Why not start a mini book club, choose a book when you arrive and settle into a quiet corner to read?

Free from distractions and with the air con keeping temperatures mild, you'll be surprised how far they get into a new story. Holiday activity days are often a feature too, so check your local library for info.

Find a park-ing spot.

It's always high on the holiday list for a reason — the fresh air, the playgrounds, the snags on the barbie… we could go on.

Venture a little further than your neighbourhood to a nature reserve or playground for a change of scenery (my kids go nuts for a new swing or slide, NUTS).

Mix it up, be a fun mum and stop the car to explore a new park you happen to be driving past. Get everyone stretching their legs. Run, play hide and seek, lie under a tree and watch the leaves or clouds, talk to each other. It's bliss.

Many parks have little cafes or takeaway windows for a spontaneous babycino or toastie — no snags or picnics need to be packed for these local gems.

Do some taste testing.

Exploring the tastes and sights at a fresh food market is a chance to try something new with the kids, and it has the added bonus of ticking off the week's fresh produce shopping list while you're there.

Scattered across the city, produce markets are a budding foodie's dream — the kids can sample delights from a range of stallholders and cuisines, learn about a dish's origin and find something new that will make its way onto the family dinner menu that week.

The best part? Spruiking and bargaining is all part of the show and taste testers are plentiful.
