Breaking news: Girl killed, others injured by falling tree at Sydney school

An eight-year-old girl has died after a large gum tree branch fell into the playground at a primary school in Sydney’s north-west. The branch fell at around 1pm, during the busy lunchbreak at Pitt Town Public School in Pitt Town, hitting three other young students and a man, who have all been taken to Westmead Hospital. A boy is thought to have suffered a fractured arm and a man in his 50s is in a critical condition with severe head injuries.

Man steals car with baby inside

A Canberra man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a car with a baby inside. It took police three hours to find the seven-month old baby boy, after they were told the thief drove the stolen car to a chemist, where he threatened staff and stolen cash and drugs. Officers arrested the man in Weetangera, Canberra where the baby was also discovered. The thief had apparently dumped the baby in its capsule on the porch of a random property. The accused male appeared in court today.

Young Alexis Martin has become one of the youngest Mensa members in the United States after scoring around 160 on her IQ test - the same score that Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein received. The three-year-old has taught herself Spanish and memorised world geography using the family iPad. Her parents say they first knew Alexis was incredibly smart when she recited bedtime stories perfectly at 18 months old.
