Who is Sam Kerr's partner? Inside the Matildas star's relationship with Kristie Mewis.

Matildas' star Sam Kerr is considered one of the greatest female footballers in the world.

She debuted for the Matildas at only 15, scored her first international goal at 16 and was selected for her first World Cup at 17. She is the only woman to have won the Golden Boot — awarded to the player who scores most goals in the tournament — in three different leagues.

Kerr is based in London most of the time, playing for Chelsea in the FA Women's Super League, recently re-signing until 2026.

She's also engaged to American national player Kristie Mewis and in November 2024, they announced they're expecting their first baby together.

Here's everything we know about Sam Kerr's partner and their relationship.

Who is Sam Kerr's partner?

How They Met.

Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis first met while playing a match against each other in 2019. Kerr says she was being "a s**t stirrer" and her competitor Mewis was "getting so angry."

After following one another on Instagram, they decided to see if there was a spark.

It was throughout the pandemic that Mewis and Kerr said they "were forced to talk" in order to get to know one another online.

"Literally forced to talk. Instagram, just started talking. It was about three or four months until we could hang out in person," Kerr told Gaffer magazine.

"The first time we ever met there was quarantine, so we had to spend two weeks together. I was thinking if I don't like her, this is going to be awkward."

The pair sparked dating rumours in 2021 when they were seen embracing after Kerr lost a game to Team USA.

Less than a week later, the Australian sportswoman confirmed her relationship on social media with a post of the couple kissing.

Long-Distance Love.

The couple has been open about navigating a long-distance relationship, with Kerr based in London and Mewis previously in the United States.

Mewis told Gaffer that it "obviously sucks" but they make it work.

"We always said it would be easier if we played in the same league because we would have the same winter break, we'd have the same summer break," she said.

"But I think that when it is the opposite, she can come and see me after her season ends and I can come here for eight weeks in the winter. So it does end up working out."

The pair ended their long-distance circumstances in 2023 when Mewis moved to West Ham in the UK's Women's Super League.

In 2023, the pair featured in the six-part docuseries The Matildas: The World at Our Feet on Disney+.

In the first episode, Mewis said she is very proud of all her partner has achieved.

"Being away from her is like one of the hardest things I have to do every single day, because she's such an important person in my life. She's my best friend — I want to do everything with her," she said.

"Sam is very funny. She makes me laugh always. As a person, as a teammate, as a leader."

World Cup 2023.

Both Kerr and Mewis participated in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, albeit on opposing teams, adding an interesting dynamic to their relationship.

At the same time though, they both noted that talking about soccer non-stop isn't their thing.

"I feel like we're each other's breath of fresh air. We get it that we don't want to talk about it," Mewis told Gaffer magazine.

"If I have a bad game or if I lose, I always know that I have her. I think that's something that we always say, we always know in the back of our heads that if things go bad or things go wrong, we always have each other."

It's their shared ability to have a laugh that Kerr said she loves most about their dynamic.

"My favourite thing about her is how much fun we have together," Kerr said on the Snacks podcast. "Like, we are literally just the biggest goofballs and we just have the most fun ever."

Kerr said that when their teams compete against one another, they go all out.

"When we play each other, we go in harder on each other. It's just so much more fun to go [play] against your friends, and especially her," she told The Oz.

"There was one time in Newcastle when we both went in for a dangerous tackle on each other. But that's the love of it, right? We can just banter afterwards."

Engagement announcement.

Kerr and Mewis announced their engagement in November 2023, with Kerr sharing the sweet moment she got down on one knee in an Instagram post.

"September 1st, 2023," she captioned the post.

Mewis confirmed the news of their engagement to People magazine.

In a conversation with the publication, the American footballer said that Kerr has "just been everything" to her, sharing that she is "my biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain, all, all of my crazy antics."

Engagement rumours swirled after a video of Mewis wearing what looked like an engagement ring emerged, hinting that Sam had popped the question in early September.

The tiny detail was spotted in a promotional clip for the EA FC 24 video game featuring Mewis, who was clearly wearing a large rock on her ring finger.

Reflecting on dating in the public eye, Mewis has said it's been overall really positive.

"I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people's lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me. I love to share my relationship on social media," she said.

"So I think if we can change the way one or two people feel about themselves, they can look at us and see that we're happy and we're trying to be as successful as we can and we're an out gay couple.

"I think that's so important."

Kerr's fellow Matilda's stars Mary Fowler and Mackenzie Arnold were quick to gush over the announcement.

"Ahhh so bloody happy for you both and can't wait for a T4 baby," Kerr's Chelsea teammate Millie Bright said.

Looking back, Mewis may have hinted at the exciting news in her birthday post for her long-time partner.

"Not me coming back here after the baby post and realising what 😉 means 🤭 ," another said.

Sam Kerr announces the baby's gender.

Since announcing the baby news, Sam Kerr has fronted a UK court charged with racially aggravated harassment against a police officer. The Matildas star had been on a night out in South London back in 2023 with Mews, which went awry.

During her time on the stand, Kerr dropped a bombshell about her baby joy, revealing a detail the public was yet to hear.

Until now, the sex of the baby, which is believed to be around 28 weeks gestation at the time of publication, had been unknown. But on the stand, she revealed that the loved-up couple know the gender.

"We are expecting a baby boy," she told the jury when asked about her relationship.

She also said that she and Mewis, who were engaged in 2023, would host their wedding this December.

Kerr has pleaded not guilty to the offence of racially aggravated harassment, which carries a maximum sentence of 26 weeks in jail under UK law.

The case revolves around a taxi ride home, where either Kerr or Mewis was sick, leading to a dispute about the fare. The driver claims that he called police and drove them to Twickenham Police station, however, Kerr claims that they were scared about being kidnapped when the taxi diverted direction and they were stuck inside.

At the station, video footage shows Kerr claiming that she had rung the police, but they hung up on her. A police officer dealing with the case, PC Lovell, responded "they wouldn't do that though, would they". Kerr responded that he was "stupid and white". This led to her being charged with racially aggravated harassment.

In the witness box, Kerr claimed that she felt she was being treated differently because of her skin colour by a person in a position of power, and didn't mean to harass him.

"I expressed myself poorly in that video," Ms Kerr said. "The point I was trying to get across was I felt like they were treating me differently and not believing me and treating me as a person who had done something wrong."

Kristie Mewis's Background.

Kristie Mewis is an accomplished soccer player in her own right.
