When you’re feeling a little glum (or you’re just in need of a good, cathartic cry) there’s nothing quite like watching some sad movies on Netflix.

However, there is a bit of an art to picking the right sad movies on Netflix to suit your mood. You don’t want anything too sappy (or too scary), or a movie that features a poorly constructed narrative that forces you to cry but doesn’t really tell a good story.

Nobody has time for that.

So, here are the seven saddest movies on Netflix that are guaranteed to make you cry every time.

The Impossible

What makes The Impossible such a sad movie to watch is knowing that it is based on tragic true events.

The movie is set in December 2004 and follows close-knit family Maria (played by Naomi Watts, who was nominated for an Academy Award for that role), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons who are on holiday in Thailand.

But the day after Christmas, their idyllic holiday turns into a nightmare when the massive 2004 tsunami inundates the area and they, along with hundreds of others, struggle to survive.

Watching The Impossible will fill you with fear and sorrow. It’s brilliant, but watch it at your own risk.

Legends of the Fall

A beautiful, yet tragic tale of family, love, and loss that will break your heart.

Legends of the Fall is a film is about three brothers and their father who are living in the wilderness and plains of Montana. Set in the early 20th century and the audience watches as the family is affected by nature, history, war, and love.

The film stars Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn and Julia Ormond.

If the scenes of the three brothers together at war, and the tragedy that befalls them, do not completely break you, then you do not have a heart.

Miss You Already

This comedy-drama will have you laughing and will also break your soul in two.

It’s a film best watched with your best friends by your side so you can hold each other and weep.

Miss You Already follows best friends Milly (Toni Collette) and Jess (Drew Barrymore), who meet in primary school and are still best friends as adults.

As they grow older, Milly settles down and marries her rocker boyfriend Kit and has children with him while Jess becomes an environmentalist and marries her long-time boyfriend Jago.

Tragedy strikes when Milly undergoes treatment to battle breast cancer while Jess tries to get pregnant.

Okja 

Everyone knows there are very sad movies... and then there are very sad movies featuring poor animals and they have the power to rip your heart out just a little bit more

The movie follows a young girl named Mija, who lives in South Korea with her grandfather and their super pig, Okja.

Things take a turn for the horrific, however, when the multinational conglomerate Mirando Corporation takes Okja and transports her to New York. While held captive, Okja is taken to a laboratory where she is forcibly bred with another super pig and flesh is taken from her for a taste test.

Okja holds a very harsh mirror up to our society while also making you feel more love than you ever thought you could feel for a super pig.

Never Let Me Go

Close friends Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Tommy (Andrew Garfield) and Ruth (Keira Knightley) grow up together at a seemingly idyllic boarding school in the English countryside.

However, after they leave school and enter the real world,  the tragic truth behind their true purpose is revealed to them.

 Never Let Me Go is a brutal examination of love, jealousy and betrayal and how friendships can break and also endure.
