Vladimir Putin tells gay people to “leave children alone”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that gay people will not be harassed or discriminated against during the upcoming Winter Olympics, provided that they “leave children alone”. In comments reported by Russian media agencies, Putin said: “We do not have a ban on non-traditional sexual relationships. We have a ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and paedophilia. I want to underline this. Propaganda among children. These are absolutely different things – a ban on something or a ban on the propaganda of the thing.”
Putin then went on to say: “You can feel relaxed and calm [in Russia], but leave children alone, please.”
Russia’s anti-gay laws, which criminalise displays of same-sex affection in public places – especially those frequented by children, have been the subject of hot debate in the lead up to 2014 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Sochi, in the country’s south.
