The most popular member of the royal family for 2018 has finally been announced and the results are pretty surprising.

Although Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton undoubtedly dominated headlines last year, it was actually Prince Harry who was named the most popular royal.

According to Daily Mail, a new poll has found that 77 per cent of the British public have a positive opinion of the Duke of Sussex, making him top of the royals.

Prince Harry was closely followed by his grandmother, the Queen, who came in at second on the poll.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – Prince William and Kate Middleton – were dubbed third and fourth on the list, followed by Prince Philip who was voted as fifth most popular royal.

On the other hand, Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle was ranked sixth on the list, with 55 per cent of voters having a positive opinion of her.

Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, came in at seventh behind the Duchess of Sussex.

The news of the survey came to a surprise to some, especially considering that Prince Harry had a particularly rebellious background.

From his infamous Las Vegas trip in 2012 to the time he dressed as a Nazi in 2005, Harry was subject to a lot of negative media attention.

But some royal experts believe that Harry's downfalls have actually helped him become so popular with the British public.

In 2017 documentary Prince Harry – An Engaging Life, royal biographer Ingrid Seward argued that there have been three versions of Prince Harry throughout his public life.

"We sort of had three Harrys," Seward explained.

"The sensitive little boy, the fighting man and the idiot," she said.

"I think people love him for all these three things."

Royal biographer Robert Johnson agrees with Seward's stance.

"Before going on camera, before making a public speech, he is very nervous, but actually that adds to his naturalness and adds to the charm."
