There have been some very sweet changes in the royal family's Christmas cards over the years.

An annual Christmas card has been a sweet tradition of the British royal family for ages.

In fact, the first card was sent way back in 1914.

Express reckons the Queen and Prince Philip will send out 750 Christmas cards this year – and our hands ache just thinking about it.

The annual cards are a fascinating look into royal life – and of course, how it has evolved throughout the years.

Here are a few of our favourites.

1914.

The first royal Christmas card was sent in 1914 by George V and Queen Mary (Queen Elizabeth II's grandparents) to troops fighting in World War I.

It featured individual portraits of the monarchs - thankfully later royal Christmas cards feature much less 'formal' photos.

1969.

A very glam looking Queen Elizabeth chose this photo of her with Charles the Prince of Wales, Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and the Philip the Duke of Edinburgh on board the Royal Yacht Britannia during a visit to Norway.

1986.

Okay, so this is where things start getting really cute.

Also, we need to know more about their Jack Russell terrier ASAP pls.

Charles and Camilla chose a family picture from their wedding as their Christmas card photo in 2005.

Also, um, William and Charles have the exact same smile in this and it's a little weird.

Prince Harry's 2015 card featured a photo of him with Battle of Britain veteran Tom Neil.

A new family photo - Merry Christmas from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The Duke and Duchess are hugely appreciative of all the warm messages they have received about their family this year and are very much looking forward to their first Christmas as a family of four.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to share a new photograph of their family. The image features on Their Royal Highnesses' Christmas card this year. The photograph shows The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with their two children at Kensington Palace. It was taken earlier this year by @chrisjacksongetty Their Royal Highnesses have also announced this morning that Princess Charlotte will attend the Willcocks Nursery School in London from January 2018. The Willcocks Nursery School has said: "We are delighted that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen the Willcocks Nursery School for Princess Charlotte. We look forward to welcoming Charlotte to our nursery in January."

Last year's card from William and Kate featured an adorable (colour coordinated) photo of their family. Kate was pregnant with Prince Louis at the time of release, but this photo was taken earlier in the year so there was no sign of a bump.

2018.

...Just kidding. The palace haven't released any 2018 cards just yet.

But the royals have gone through a lot of changes this year - with Harry marrying Meghan Markle and the birth of William and Kate's third child Louis - so we're looking forward to seeing what photos they choose.
