So when news broke on Sunday that Reiner and his wife, film producer and actress Michele Reiner, were found dead in their LA home, shock rippled far beyond Hollywood.

Just days earlier, the couple were in the "best place" in their lives, according to former California first lady Maria Shriver, who had dinner with them just last week.

News first broke on Sunday that homicide detectives were on the scene at Reiner's LA home.

The Los Angeles Fire Department then shared a 78-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman were found dead at the address, with police soon declaring it an apparent homicide.

While police were yet to formally identify the couple to the media, a spokesperson for the Reiner family soon confirmed the news of their deaths, describing the loss as "tragic" for the family.

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time," the spokesperson said in a statement, per CNN.

Late on Sunday, the LA Police Department told a press conference they were not seeking any suspects at that time.

A major development came on Monday morning, when reports stated Nick Reiner, the couple's 32-year-old son, had been held in an LA jail.

By afternoon (Tuesday morning in Australia), police confirmed Nick had been arrested and alleged he was "responsible" for his parents' deaths.

"He was booked for murder and remains in custody with no bail," police said in a statement.

Authorities have not shared any details on how the victims died.

Police said the case will be presented to the LA County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration on Tuesday.

Reiner met his wife of three decades on the set of the iconic romcom When Harry Met Sally, with the director even sharing how their romance inspired the movie's heartwarming ending that we all love so much.

Speaking to CNN last year, Reiner shared how the film was going to end with Harry and Sally "seeing each other after years, talking and then walking away from each other" — a reflection of his own feelings that he may not find love, having spent many years single.

Then, he met Michele and everything changed.

"I met Michele and I thought: OK, I see how this works," he told The Guardian in 2018.

Instead, we got the Harry's iconic declaration of love at the New Year's Eve party and a wedding.

Michele and Reiner married in 1989, the same year the film was released, and went on to have three children together.

Reiner and Michele collaborated on several projects over the years, with Michele producing the Emmy-nominated documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which Reiner directed, as well as several Reiner films, including Shock and Awe and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released this year.

The couple were also passionate advocates for marriage equality and early childhood development.

"I can honestly say the reason I've done as many things in the political sphere is largely because of her," Reiner told Stephen Colbert in 2016, joking, "She is my Bunsen burner that lights the flame in my ass."

Tributes flow.

The couple's deaths have sent shockwaves through Hollywood, as tributes pour in from the entertainment community.

Screen Actors Guild union president Sean Astin labelled Reiner as "one of the most significant figures in the history of film and television".

"The impact he made on American culture simply can't be overstated," Astin said in a statement.

Author Stephen King said he was "horrified and saddened" by the news.

"Wonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker (including 2 of mine). Rest in peace, Rob. You always stood by me," he wrote on X.

Actress Jane Fonda remembered the pair as "wonderful, caring, smart, funny, generous people, always coming up with ideas for how to make the world better, kinder".

Former Vice President Kamala Harris described Reiner and Michele as "dear friends".

"Rob Reiner's work has impacted generations of Americans," she said on X.

"The characters, dialogue, and visuals he brought to life in film and television are woven throughout our culture. Rob loved our country, cared deeply about the future of our nation, and fought for America's democracy.

"Rob and his wife Michele loved each other very much."

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to claim Reiner was a "tortured and struggling, but once very talented director" who reportedly died "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT".

Reiner was a lifelong Democrat and frequent critic of Trump.

LA Mayor Karen Bass called Reiner's death a "devastating loss for our city and country".

"Rob Reiner's contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice," she said in a statement.

"An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others. "

Bass said she was personally "heartbroken" by the couple's deaths, having known Reiner.

"I want to thank all of the first responders who were called to this tragic event. The investigation is ongoing. I'm holding all who loved Rob and Michele in my heart."
