From family scandals to handbag scams: Where the Rich Kids of Instagram are now.

They were the faces of excess. The Rich Kids of Instagram era was a cultural moment; part reality show, part cautionary tale.

They were the children of billionaires and tycoons who thought nothing of spraying champagne on private jets or calling the rest of us "peasants".

A decade later, their glossy feeds have faded, and reality has come knocking. One of the most notorious "rich kids", Jack Watkin, has just been sentenced to six years in prison for scamming friends and family out of nearly £200,000 (approx $400,00AUD).

Here's what happened to him, and some of the other Rich Kids of Instagram, after the cameras behind the 2015 documentary stopped rolling.

Jack Watkin.

Jack Watkin, once known for calling his family the "British Kardashians", is now behind bars.

After the show, the 26-year-old posed as a wealthy businessman running a designer handbag company, convincing investors, including his own father, to give him hundreds of thousands of pounds.

He promised big returns from selling Hermès handbags, but neither the bags nor the profits ever existed.

Instead, he used the cash to fund his lavish lifestyle.

An investigation was launched in 2022, when one victim became suspicious of Watkin's excuses and reported him to the Metropolitan Police, BBC reports. The investigation, carried out by Cheshire Constabulary's Economic Crime Unit, uncovered a string of victims, as well as a large amount of luxury goods, and hotel bills.

When police seized Watkin's mobile phone, detectives allegedly found indecent photographs of children and animals.

In June this year, Watkin pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud. This month, he was sentenced to six years in prison, including time for separate offences involving the creation of indecent images. He must spend 10 years registered as a sex offender, and be subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The court heard Watkin had "deluded himself" into believing his own influencer persona.

Detective Constable Gareth Yates, of Cheshire Constabulary Economic Crime Unit said: "Not only did Watkin deceive his victims by befriending them and taking thousands from them, but he was also hiding a depraved secret habit, sickening his victims further after his hideous secret was uncovered when his mobile phones were downloaded by specialist officers."

"It was never going to end well, and his downfall was inevitable. Eventually, his lies caught up with him and he is now facing the consequences of his deceit, and his perversions."
