It’s time for Barbara, Myrtle and Betty to make a triumphant return in the baby name stakes.
If you’ve spent any time around kids recently, you’ve probably noticed that (a) Peppa Pig is so hot right now, and (b) retro baby names are having a moment.
The top Aussie baby names for 2014 included classically lovely names like Ava, Amelia, Abigail, Isla and Ruby for girls and Noah, Jacob, Alexander, Thomas and William for boys.
But what about those lesser-known and almost wholly forgotten beauties?
2. Benedict.
Two words: Benedict Cumberbatch.
3. Margaret.
The nickname ‘Maggie’ is super cute AND she is also the best Simpsons character.
4. Myrtle.
It rhymes with turtle. Not much more to say, really.
5. Betty.
Every old lady we know called Betty is awesome and badass.
6. Arthur.
Remember the cartoon character Arthur? There was also an Uncle Arthur on Babar. Who wouldn’t want to be named after those guys?
6. Louisa.
Sounds so regal or Sound of Music-esque.
7. Vivienne.
Pretty and feminine enough to catch the attention of Angelina Jolie.
8. Mabel.
In
9. Archibald.
You wouldn’t mess with an Archibald. He just sounds noble and tough.
10. Meryl.
Look, it’s not the nicest of names. But Meryl Streep has done OK for herself, hasn’t she?
11. Nigel.
It’s time to stop making Nigel an insult (you’re such a Nigel, Nigel No Friends etc) and let Nigel have a moment in the sun.
What retro baby names would you like to see make a comeback?
