With one speech, Reese Witherspoon made an accidental enemy in Hollywood.

Reese Witherspoon has shared a *slightly awkward* story about a friendship-ending awards speech, and internet sleuths thinks they know exactly who it's about.

During a recent interview with PEOPLE to promote her new film You're Cordially Invited, Witherspoon revealed how a misread room and an ill-timed attempt at comedy led to a permanent falling out with a "serious, proper actress".

The story goes like this: Witherspoon was asked to present an award to a friend that she "didn't really know that well".

Witherspoon had never been to this particular award show before, and thought it would be a more relaxed event where a comedy 'roast', would fit the bill.

She prepared accordingly but unfortunately, the event turned out to be quite the opposite.

"The tone was British. Elegant. Classy," Witherspoon explained, before sharing the moment she knew things had gone terribly wrong. "I was like, 'Remember the time we got laser hair removal?' I'm kidding. I'm still embarrassed about it."

The result? A completely severed friendship.

"It wasn't good. We're not friends anymore. I'm not even kidding. We're not friends anymore. She doesn't like me anymore," Witherspoon admitted in the interview.

While Witherspoon didn't name names, internet sleuths have been quick to connect the dots to Kate Winslet, pointing to a specific event from 2007, per Just Jared.

According to transcripts published to a Witherspoon fan site at the time, she presented an award to Winslet at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards that year.

During her speech, she notably attempted to mimic Winslet's British accent while recounting their first neighbourhood interaction.

"Imagine my good fortune when Kate Winslet moved into my neighborhood, rang my doorbell and said, (insert British accent here) 'Dahling, Sam is off shooting, and I believe our children are the same age. Could they possibly have a play date and oh, by the way, it's almost 9 o'clock and I've had nothing to drink, do you have any wine?'"

Said transcript also references Witherspoon discussing laser hair removal, but the exact details of what was said remain unconfirmed.

Before we jump to conclusions, it's worth noting that the two actresses have appeared friendly in public since then.

They even presented together at the 2016 Academy Awards, where they were seen smiling and embracing on stage.

Neither Winslet nor her representatives have commented on the speculation, and Witherspoon hasn't confirmed or denied the theories about who the mystery actress might be.

At this stage, it seems the takeaway is, roast at your own peril.
