It’s easy to say you’ll quit a bad habit, we all make New Years Resolutions at the start of the year, to quit smoking, drink less, exercise more or eat healthy.

29 year old mother of two Elizabeth Hogan has been there and done that, promising to quit smoking time and time again.

Smoking all throughout her 20’s Elizabeth knew it was a terrible habit, however found it really hard to break her addiction and stop.

As her two precious daughters get older, Elizabeth doesn’t want them to grow up thinking smoking is normal and an ok habit to take up.

So on 2 January of this year, Elizabeth quit…however unlike the other times she has tried, she now has an extra incentive, she is raising much needed funds for Cancer Council NSW at the same time.

Her family and friends are backing her to ‘Quit For Cancer’, a Cancer Council initiative whereby individuals can choose to quit a bad habit and raise funds which go towards research, prevention and support services for cancer patients.

Not only is quitting smoking reducing her own cancer risk, by fundraising for Cancer Council NSW she is also helping the one in two who will get cancer before the age of 85.

Taking part in Quit For Cancer has been a huge motivation for Elizabeth and a stark reminder of how healthy lifestyle choices can decrease your cancer risk. Up to 30 per cent of cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices including not smoking, reducing alcohol intake, regular exercise and eating healthy.

Now three weeks into her quit challenge, Elizabeth is going strong. Of course she has had times where she wants to retreat back to her old habits…however when times get tough she just keeps herself busy, either with the kids, or in the kitchen, even in the garage clearing old clutter!

Cancer Council NSW has also been a big support providing booklets, guidance and advice on quitting.

So what’s Elizabeth’s advice to others one month in? Just do it! You may have tried quitting before (like her!) however this time, by registering for Quit For Cancer and having your loved ones donating money to Cancer Council NSW – it’s a great guarantee and way to stick to your goals.

Now is the perfect time to Quit For Cancer. The summer season festivities are starting to wrap up and we can finally start drinking less, eating better, hitting the gym and sticking to those New Year goals we promised ourselves in early January.

Not only will kicking your bad habits be good for your health, but by supporting Cancer Council NSW’s Quit For Cancer, you can make a difference against cancer – a disease affecting one in two Australians in our lifetime.
