LEIGH CAMPBELL: 'Sick of your foundation melting or transferring? Read this.'

You know the scenario.

You're catching up with a friend, or at a party or gathering, and your buddy goes in for a hello hug. You're excited to see them, so you hug back, but with that awkward stance where you turn your head to the side and away from the embrace.

When you release, you take a quick glance at their shoulder and pray to the makeup gods that your foundation hasn't transferred onto to their shirt.

No flesh-coloured smudge on the fabric? Phew.

Watch: Speaking of foundation, here's what happened when Em Vernem tried the whisking foundation hack. Post continues below.

But if you do worry about your foundation transferring, or it often looks like it has faded away or melted off by midday, I'm here to help.

You might not want to switch up your foundation, which I totally get. Finding the right base is a mission, so if you've got one you love, try adding the below steps to up its staying power.

The best products for long-lasting makeup.

  1. e.l.f Power Grip Primer, $24.

I have combination skin, but I still like a glowy finish, not too matte. I used to skip primer because I felt it was an unnecessary step that'd just add another layer to my face, making it look more oily. But now, when the hot weather takes my complexion from glowy to greasy, I use the e.l.f Power Grip Primer, $24.

This blew up on social media last year, but I didn't try it until a few months ago, and now I totally get it. Your makeup is still radiant, but it truly does hold it in place.

2. Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, $34.

Setting spray is another product that feels like a 'maybe' step, but using the right one will definitely give your makeup longevity. The O.G, Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, $34, is like spraying hairspray on your face, except it's much better for your skin. I used this on my wedding day (which was a sweaty 38 degrees) when my makeup was done at 9am, and I promise you it was all still exactly where it had been applied at 2am when I cleansed it off.

3. Benefit The Porefessional Translucent Setting Powder, $40.

I know adding powder on top of setting spray sounds like overkill, but hear me out.

Once my setting spray has, well, set, I then take a medium-sized fluffy brush and very lightly dust a teeny bit of Benefit The Porefessional Translucent Setting Powder, $40, over my forehead, nose and chin. It gives a beautiful blurred look and further future-proofs your makeup (without making it look chalky or too matte).

If you do happen to be in the market for a new base, our resident road-tester, Em Vernem, actually put five of her favourite foundations to the test by cuddling someone in a white shirt and documenting every result. Want to know which base passed the test and which ones didn't? Click here.
