If you only buy one dress for spring, make it this celeb-approved style.

There's nothing like an outdoor event scheduled in the first weeks of spring to remind you it's… not winter anymore.

The sun is (theoretically) out, and that calls for lighter layers, more frivolous outfits, maybe even a frock!

But what frock? Our legs haven't seen daylight for months! They're barely ready!

If you're facing this rather pressing dilemma too, allow me to introduce you to one of the key silhouettes of the season: The Princess Waist dress.

The style is characterised by its signature V-shaped waist, with hips that flare out towards a feminine full skirt.

Because it cinches at the waist, it's a little more approachable than the drop-waist dresses that had a moment last summer.

We first clocked the shape on Kendall Jenner at Coachella back in April. Attending a party for her tequila brand 818, Jenner wore a butter-yellow princess waist dress by Proenza Schouler that went instantly viral (and we made a mental note to save her look for spring.)

Diane Kruger wore a similar style in white cotton poplin at the Cannes Film Festival in May, pairing her dress with pointy flats and sleek sunnies.

Since then, the look has been embraced by influencers and led to a burgeoning retail trend — with brands like Reformation, Aje and Shona Joy jumping on board with versions in different cuts and fabrications.

While the name might sound a bit twee, the Princess Waist dress is actually a really modern way to embrace a ladylike silhouette. It makes a simple statement, no matter how you style it.

The versatile shape works for daytime (just add ballet flats and a tote), and can easily be dressed up for an event with heels and an evening bag.
