Considering the many and varied nativity scenes, bishop hats and crosses saturating the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday, there was no mistaking the theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.
One of the most conservative institutions in the land had collided with the most glittery, the intersection leaving you looking and wondering if there really was a tiny baby Jesus sitting atop Sarah Jessica Parker’s head?!?!
The costumes were extravagant, for almost every single person at the gala.
That is everyone except James Martin, a Jesuit priest and the editor-at-large of the magazine America.
Martin, naturally, went as himself.
The response to his costume was priceless:
Send prayers to James Martin, whose everyday attire was deemed sexy but audacious by celebrities.
What a strange, strange world.
