The Practical Magic sequel cast has been confirmed. And one iconic actress says she's been cut.

Everyone is buzzing about the upcoming Practical Magic sequel. The beloved 1998 film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman is finally getting a follow-up, and fans couldn't be more thrilled about the reunion we've all been waiting for.

The cast has been announced with lots of returning favourites set to reprise their magical roles. But there's one glaring omission that's causing quite the stir: Evan Rachel Wood will not be coming back.

The casting drama has sent shockwaves through the Practical Magic fandom, with Wood's public statement saying she actively wanted to return but was turned down by production. What makes this particularly awkward? Bullock and Kidman aren't just starring in the sequel — they're also executive producers, meaning they likely had a say in the decision to recast Wood's character rather than bring her back.

The actress, who played Sally's daughter Kylie in the original, clearly felt blindsided by the snub, taking to social media to set the record straight after fans kept asking about her involvement.

"I am getting asked about this a lot, so I'll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the Practical Magic sequel," Wood wrote on her Instagram stories. "I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters."

Drama indeed. We would've loved to see her back, especially given how integral her character was to the original film's emotional core… but I guess that's showbiz, baby.

Here's everything we know about the upcoming sequel so far.

Who is in the cast of Practical Magic 2?

The big news that has everyone excited is that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are both returning as the Owens sisters. This reunion alone is enough to make any '90s movie lover's heart skip a beat.

New additions to the cast include Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod. The movie is directed by Susanne Bier, with a screenplay co-written by Akiva Goldsman (co-writer of the original film) and Georgia Pritchett.

The blend of returning talent and fresh faces suggests the sequel will bridge the gap between the original's nostalgic charm and contemporary storytelling — minus Wood's character, who will apparently be recast.

What is the plot of Practical Magic 2?

Let's have a quick refresher, shall we? The original Practical Magic, based on Alice Hoffman's beloved novel, followed sisters Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman) Owens — two witches from a family cursed so that any man who falls in love with an Owens woman will meet an untimely end. Talk about relationship baggage.

After Gillian's toxic boyfriend Jimmy meets his maker during a confrontation, the sisters find themselves in quite the pickle, using their magical abilities to cover up his death while dodging a suspicious detective and dealing with Jimmy's very angry ghost. Classic sisterly bonding, really.

Now… we have intel that the sequel will be based on the final book in Hoffman's series, The Book of Magic.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer Denise Di Novi opened up about the source material and promised the film will stick closely to the novel's plot.

"I think [fans are] going to be very pleased," she said. "We're going to be very faithful. We're cognisant to how important those characters and that movie are to so many people. We're not going to reinvent the wheel. We're going to draw from Alice Hoffman's books, as the first movie did, and we're going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is."

The book brings all the Owens women (and apparently a "long-lost brother" — intriguing) together for the ultimate family reunion: saving Jet from death's door and finally putting an end to that pesky Owens family curse once and for all. About bloody time, if you ask us.

When is Practical Magic 2 coming out?

Production is underway for the highly anticipated sequel, which arrives in theatres September 18, 2026.

The sequel has been in development for some time, with Warner Bros. clearly keen to capitalise on the original film's enduring popularity and cult status.

Whilst Evan Rachel Wood's absence is disappointing for fans who loved her portrayal in the original, the return of Bullock and Kidman, combined with an exciting new cast, should provide enough star power to make this sequel truly magical.
