Forget the Amalfi Coast hype, this stunning town is where you should be heading.

So, you're joining the rest of Australia and flocking off to Europe to soak up the summer sun?

Firstly, I'm jealous. Secondly, I bet the Amalfi Coast is sitting pretty at the top of your travel bucket list. I don't blame you. It's a breathtaking stretch of dramatic cliffs and rugged shoreline dotted with picture-perfect fishing villages.

Trust me, I've been there and fallen under its spell. But the Italian beachside destination that truly captured my heart lies on the opposite side of the country's coastline, where fewer crowds and equally stunning views await.

Let me introduce you to Polignano a Mare, a jewel nestled in the Apulia region along the Adriatic Sea in southern Italy.

This enchanting town sits just 30 minutes from Bari, one of Puglia's main transport hubs, dramatically perched atop honey-coloured limestone cliffs that plunge into crystal-clear turquoise waters.

The region is renowned for its spectacular coastline, quality olive oil, and exceptional wines, but it's Polignano a Mare that will leave you planning your return before you've even left.

If you're craving authentic Italian charm, dazzling sea grottos, and that perfect balance of beauty without the overwhelming crowds, this is your place.

Coastal treasures and breathtaking viewpoints.

Chances are, you've already glimpsed Polignano a Mare's magic without realising it. Located on the heel of Italy's boot, this coastal town is home to the world-famous Cala Monachile (also known as Lama Monachile beach).

Picture this: a small, intimate beach nestled right in the town centre, dramatically framed by rocky cliffs. In September, these very cliffs transform into a stage for Red Bull's spectacular diving competitions.

Pro tip: The beach fills up by lunchtime, so arrive early to claim your slice of paradise. Oh, and definitely swallow your fashion ego and pack reef shoes. Navigating the pebbly shore in bare feet is both a nightmare and a surprisingly humbling experience.

Adventurous souls can swim around the corner to discover cliff jumping spots with varying heights. There's something for everyone, even those with a fear of heights like myself (though I'll warn you, even the smallest jump feels more terrifying than it looks).

Beyond the famous beach lies a coastline peppered with secret spots waiting to be discovered.

Spiaggia del Grottone (Grottone Beach) features a natural swimming pool that feels like your own private oasis. Reach it via the scenic Domenico Modugno walkway – the journey alone is worth it for the views.

The charming Ristorante Il Grottone perches nearby if you fancy making a day of it, though be prepared for some scrambling to access the water.

Head along the coast for a few more minutes, and you'll find Cala Paguro, a charming little cove that offers offers an escape from tourist crowds. This intimate pebble beach is where locals come to unwind, giving you an authentic taste of Italian coastal life. .

The coastline's beauty demands to be admired from every angle.

Punto Panoramico provides the perfect sunset viewing spot, while La Balconata sul Mare in the old town offers the ultimate vantage point for those Instagram-worthy beach shots.

Meanwhile, Pietra Piatta delivers panoramic views encompassing the sea, beach, and historic fortress in one spectacular frame.

Watch for poetry in the streets.

The magic extends far beyond the coastline. Step into the town centre at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and prepare to be enchanted by streets so pristinely whitewashed, they'll have you questioning whether you've accidentally wandered into Santorini.

In Centro Storico, the historic heart of town, you'll discover the oldest buildings, charming alleyways, and impressive churches.

Keep your eyes peeled for the poetry of Guido Il Flâneur adorning the walls — verses left by local poet Guido Lupori, one of the town's most beloved residents. (They're not his words, but are some of his favourite lines).

"Il Flâneur," meaning "the wanderer" in French, perfectly captures the spirit of someone who explores a city simply to experience its essence.

Now, I'm a vegetarian, but my friends gave the seafood rave reviews. Think: the day's catch prepared with generations of Italian coastal wisdom.

Of course, you can't go wrong with classic pizza and gelato on repeat (we ate that more times than I can count).

For a truly magical splurge, Grotta Palazzese offers dining inside a natural cave carved into the cliffs.

It's undeniably spectacular, though it comes with a hefty price tag: €250 ($445) minimum spend per person for à la carte, or €140 ($250) for the tasting menu.

While it didn't fit our holiday budget, the photos alone are worth the Instagram scroll.

Beyond Polignano.

A short train ride away lies Monopoli, known for its historic centre and beautiful beaches.

We spent a blissful day beach-hopping, indulging in more gelato than strictly necessary, and soaking in the perfect blend of rich historical architecture and vibrant local culture.

You could even consider it as an alternative base — it's larger and offers more accommodation options.
