Everyone’s favourite mystery series Poker Face season two is back on Stan. You won’t believe this cast list.

The Stan series Poker Face came to life thanks to a conversation between two of the world's best storytellers about what they wanted to see on screen.

One night, many years ago, actress Natasha Lyonne was seated next to filmmaker Rian Johnson at a dinner party, and the two old friends got to talking about the shows they had grown up watching. Shows they now wished would return in some form to their TV screens.

While professing their love for shows such as Magnum P.I., Murder, She Wrote, and Quantum Leap, Johnson (the filmmaker behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Knives Out, and Glass Onion) and Lyonne (best known for starring in Orange Is the New Black and Russian Doll) first started talking about the idea for Poker Face.

In the series, Lyonne stars as Charlie Cole, a woman with a very unique skill that allows her to function as a human lie detector. This mystery of the week-style series sees Charlie delve into a new case in each episode, using her talent of being able to tell when someone is lying to help solve everything from theft to murder.

Season one of Poker Face saw Charlie become embroiled in a string of murders while working as a casino waitress in Nevada, with the murders from the pilot episode threatening to kill her next, forcing her to flee her job and go on the run.

While on the run, Charlie took refuge in a series of different towns and cities, all while picking up different gigs along the way that saw her do everything from selling band merchandise to working in a retirement home, all the while stumbling across murder plots that she helps to solve.

In the season one finale, we saw Charlie being sucked back into the murder plot from the premiere episode, confronting the people who had been chasing her, fleeing the FBI, having her name eventually cleared and then having to go back on the run again.

Season two sees Charlie pulled into one of the most bizarre murder mysteries that Poker Face has served up yet. After attending a funeral with her friend Delia, who is mourning the loss of her sister, Charlie quickly becomes aware that all is not as it seems with this slightly twisted family, and the ways in which they keep dying.

In a tale of long-lost sisters, faked suicides, lies, and quite a bit of brutal murder, Charlie helps the family get to the bottom of what is really happening to them, and the surprise twist is what makes Poker Face such an endlessly entertaining show to watch.

In the season two premiere, the roles of all the sisters are played to perfection by Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, in a turn that will surely see her nominated for numerous statues come awards season.

The high calibre of guest stars taking part in these surprising murder mystery of the week storylines has always been one of Poker Face's greatest assets.

Season one featured guest stars such as Adrien Brody, Chloë Sevigny, Jameela Jamil, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Stephanie Hsu and Clea DuVall.

When it comes to season two, Poker Face has really upped the ante with its guest stars, with the cast list featuring John Mulaney, Katie Holmes, Awkwafina, Melanie Lynskey, Kumail Nanjiani, Justin Theroux, and Natasha Lyonne's former Orange Is the New Black castmate Taylor Schilling.

Lyonne's incredible performance as Charlie is also what makes Poker Face such an unmissable series. Her comedic timing is impeccable, and the character is so mesmerising and layered that you find yourself leaning closer to the screen as each episode unfolds, just to see how Charlie's storyline will play out next.

She is also a character that you cannot help but root for and feel protective over, even when she goes ahead and makes some truly questionable decisions that end up putting her life in danger once again. It's a testament to both Lyonne's performance and the writing on Poker Face that we as the audience are willing and ready to follow her along on any kind of caper and lean into any style of plot twist. Charlie Cole is a truly original character, and in a sea of new TV releases, Poker Face manages to craft a world and tone that is truly unique.
