Liane Moriarty is a brilliant and popular writer.
Her sixth and latest book Big Little Lies went straight to number 1 on the New York Times Bestseller List. The clever and mysterious The Husband’s Secret has sold more than two million copies and been translated into 35 languages. Both are heading to film and TV screens the former starring Nicole Kidmand and Reese Witherspoon.
Yet Moriarty is often dismissed as a ‘suburban writer’ and her novels as chick lit.
This week on the Debrief Daily podcast Just Between Us we discuss the snobbery around popular female fiction. While Sarah is reading Liane, Rebecca is making her way through the 100 Greatest Novels of All Time. Only one of them is struggling.
When do we need to read (or listen) to certain types of books? And is it true that popular novels ignore the big issues and the small dramas of life that mean so much.
We also reveal how vaginas are like snowflakes, and what the increasing desire for women to make them look identical means for sex, sensation and dating.
