real life

'I met my soulmate on a Jetstar flight. It all started with a $12 bet.'

Leah knows a thing or two about love.

As the marriage celebrant behind Married By Leah, she's helped countless couples tie the knot — from lavish white weddings to intimate bush retreats and spontaneous elopements. She's heard every kind of love story imaginable.

But she never expected her own to begin on a Jetstar flight; Two strangers. One chance encounter. And the moment that changed everything.

Classic meet-cute territory, right?

Leah was heading to the Gold Coast to officiate a wedding when she found herself sitting next to Mat, who was also off to a wedding.

They got talking, and Mat posed the ultimate budget airline question: "What do you think would be the cost of a drink on a Jetstar flight?"

Game on. Whoever guessed closest would buy the other a drink.

"He said 18, I said 12. It was 11," Leah told Mamamia.

And there they were, sharing a gin and tonic at the beginning of something beautiful, without even knowing it.

The hour-long flight flew by as they swapped stories about their lives. But as they prepared to land, reality hit. This magical moment was about to end.

"I said, 'Enjoy the wedding. See you!' He said, 'Bye.' I got off the plane and as I was walking through the doors into the airport I could hear steps behind me," Leah said.

"He called out. He was trying to think of something to say but settled on, 'Can I get your number?'

"He pulled out his phone and it was dead."

Now, six years later, Leah knows this is classic Mat.

"He always forgets to charge his phone," Leah laughed.

But they weren't giving up that easily. Leah took Mat's number instead, promising herself she'd play it cool. Take her time.

"I went to the baggage carousel, standing there like I'm not going to message," she said.

"Then my bag took so long, I was like, 'Stuff it, just take a chance.'"

The gamble paid off.

A week later, they met for their first official date back in Sydney and immediately knew they'd found something special.

"We met up for a drink and were late to our reservation because we were so busy talking," Leah said.

"We were the last people in the restaurant at the end of our dinner. We shared a cheeky kiss and haven't been apart since."

Fast-forward almost six years, Leah and Mat are now preparing to welcome their second child.

"I'm really proud of us," she reflected.

"We've been through a lot … overall our relationship is something we'll constantly work on and check in on but I think we're an absolute team and we make our decisions together.

"It's crazy to think a one-hour plane was all it took to connect two people."

Funny how life works, isn't it?
