I’ve had such fun working on this project for Uniqlo.

It was like a Beyonce track on loop.

I discovered Uniqlo about a decade ago while in New York. It’s the ultimate high-street, unisex brand. This is the place you’ll find the perfect soft t-shirt, cashmere sweater or cotton shirt and you’ll find it in every colour.

This is a brand that does great quality classics at affordable prices.

We collaborated on a series of how-to styling posts and videos for the launch of Premium Linen Collection and seriously, this was a dream.

I love linen – it’s a great natural fabric – and some of fashion’s most legendary moments have been down to the texture and crinkle that only linen can deliver.

In Part One, I look back at those iconic moments from the 70’s and 80’s and show you how to wear it in 2015.

I confess to three new shirts, a denim skirt and a lot of khaki.

Find me a women who didn’t love James Spader just a little bit more than Andrew McCarthy in the Pretty In Pink?

Spader as bad guy Steff defined the 80’s preppy look.  He was all loose linen suits, half unbuttoned pastel shirts, no socks with loafers and tortoise shell shades.

You can make it feminine by taking the hero piece – pastel linen shirt – and wearing it open with long cuffs underneath a slouchy white pant suit.

It a soft, flattering look and super pretty for summer.

I’m a sucker for all things pale blue but would also like this suit with a pale pink or pale lemon shirt too.

It’s a great way to make a suit work harder in your wardrobe because the pop of colour will make it look different every time.

Layer Your Neutrals.

There’s something about linen in film isn’t there?

It’s so epic.

My favourite moments come from Out Of Africa, with Meryl and Robert in acres of beige linen against the lushness of the African sky.

The styling take-out from this movie is layering neutral on neutral. It’s got a very European summer vibe.

Here, I’ve taken an over-sized tunic and turned it into a skirt (old styling trick).

Simply undo all the buttons, step into the neck and then tie the sleeves in a knot around the back or front. Next, I added a linen-blend long t-shirt and a more fitted shirt in the same colour over the top.

Belt, bangles. Done.

Urban Khaki.

I grew up in the era of mega models.

All my favourite images (and the ones I stuck on my school books) were of ripped out of American Vogue when the supermodels went on safari.

Christy Brinkley, Christy Turlington, Amber Valetta…wearing khaki everything, riding elephants and sleeping in glamourous tents.

It was a real moment in fashion photography.

Right now, the only thing I want to wear is khaki.

I believe strongly in its powers – this is a colour that works with every shade on the wheel.

I feel a little Top Gun (call sign Charlie) but I love this outfit hard.

One of the great things about wearing linen is the layering. The natural fibres help regulate your body temperature and it keeps you cool.

If all out khaki is too much for you then swap the skirt for something more classic like these black crop trousers ($49.95) or a simple denim skirt ($49.95)

Make It ManStyle.

This look is sooooo different for me.

Proof that clothes can transform.

I drew near literal inspiration from Diane Keaton’s iconic man style as her alter-ego Annie Hall.

One of the things, I like about the Uniqlo brand is that it’s truly unisex. Women can wear men’s, men can wear women’s, boy to girls, girls to boys – you can shop the whole breadth of the brand.

That’s what I’ve done here: Teaming a women’s pale blue and white striped linen shirt (so must-have) and snug black jersey blazer with men’s slouchy chinos and a belt to toughen out the look.

This is Annie Hall, so you need to keep the accessories retro. The bag is from a flea market in New York and the camera is the Olympus OM D EM-10
