Three years ago, Patricia Arquette’s sister Alexis died from complications related to AIDS.
The fellow actress also happened to be transgender, and Patricia has used her Emmys award speech to tell the world that she is not just mourning her sister, she is mourning for the continued bias felt by trans people.
The nominated cast of Game of Thrones presented The Act star with an Emmy for outstanding supporting actress, after she beat out fellow nominees; Sharp Objects’ Patricia Clarkson, Fosse/Verdon’s Margaret Qualley, Chernobyl’s Emily Watson, as well as When They See Us’ Marsha Stephanie Blake and Vera Farmiga.
Here’s Patricia’s acceptance speech. Post continues after video.
“I’m grateful to be working at 50 and to be getting the best roles of my life,” she began.
“But in my heart I am so sad I lost my sister Alexis, I’m in mourning the rest of my life. And I will be for the rest of my life, for you, until we change the world so that trans people are not persecuted.
“Give them jobs. They’re human beings. Let’s give them jobs. Let’s get rid of the bias that we have everywhere,” she said.
In 2016, Alexis died aged 47 surrounded by friends and family after a “long time suffering,” according to PEOPLE.
