A blow-by-blow of how the biggest blunder in Oscars history unfolded.

It’s already been called “the most dramatic moment in Oscars history,” and we haven’t seen an error like this since the infamous Australia’s Next Top Model finale in 2010.

During Monday’s 89th Academy Awards, it looked very much like La La Land was going to win literally every award.

So much so that directly after Emma Stone won Best Actress for the film, La La Land was announced by presenter Faye Dunaway as having won the Oscar for Best Picture.

There was only one problem.

It didn’t win.

One of La La Land's entourage began to deliver an acceptance speech, but then suddenly said, "we lost by the way."

There was a moment of... weirdness. It was surreal. All of a sudden, producer Jordan Horowitz grabbed the microphone, and looking towards where the Moonlight team were sitting, said, "'Moonlight', you guys won Best Picture."

"This is not a joke. Come on. This is not a joke," he said.

"I'm afraid they read the wrong thing," said another person on stage.

"This is not a joke," Horowitz repeated. "'Moonlight' has won best picture. 'Moonlight'. Best picture."

Host Jimmy Kimmel said, "Guys... This is very unfortunate what happened. Personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this. I would like to see you get an Oscar anyway. Why can't we just give out a wholebunch of them?"

Horowitz then said, "I'm going to be really proud to hand this to my friends from Moonlight."

Beatty explained, "I opened the envelope, and it said Emma Stone, La La Land."

"That's why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny."

However, in a new twist, Emma Stone has claimed she was holding the card announcing her Best Actress in a Leading Role win in her hand "the entire time."

Speaking with press backstage post-ceremony, the star praised Moonlight and expressed genuine excitement about the film's eventual win. But she then went on to dispel the theory about her winning card.

"So whatever story — I don't mean to start stuff, but whatever story that was, I had that card. So I'm not sure what happened," Stone said.

In the end, Moonlight's director, Barry Jenkins, eventually received the award and gave his speech.
