OPINION: The Devil Wears Prada sequel shouldn't be happening.

It's official: a sequel to the 2006 fashion classic The Devil Wears Prada is definitely happening. And sooner than we all thought. That's right… the sequel is slated for a May 2026 release. But, let's be honest, this feels about as necessary as cerulean blue sweaters at Fashion Week.

As someone who counts this masterpiece amongst my absolute favourite movies of all time (I've likely watched it more times than John Krasinski… if you know, you know), let me be perfectly clear: some things are sacred, and this film is one of them.

While details remain frustratingly vague, discussions about The Devil Wears Prada 2 have been circulating online, with fans speculating about who might step into those designer heels again (though we are fairly certain the main cast will be returning).

You'd think that the upcoming movie would draw from Lauren Weisberger's 2013 follow-up novel, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, which picks up ten years after Andy Sachs threw her phone into that Parisian fountain and walked away from Miranda Priestly forever.

In the book, Andy is now editing a high-end bridal magazine and planning her own wedding when Miranda's shadow looms back into her life. Because of course it does. Heaven forbid we let sleeping fashion editors lie.

But, you would be wrong. According to Variety, the movie sequel shifts focus to Miranda Priestly's perspective as she battles to save her fashion empire from the 'digital apocalypse'. We'll watch the ice queen herself attempt to desperately cling to relevance as magazine sales plummet.

The delicious irony? Emily Charlton — yes, the Emily who once survived on cubes of cheese — has transformed into a powerhouse executive at a luxury conglomerate controlling the advertising budgets Miranda so desperately needs.

Now, I have to admit, I'm a little pleased to hear about this new development in plot because the written sequel wasn't exactly... well, groundbreaking.

Revenge Wears Prada received mixed reviews at best. Critics noted it lacked the bite and insight of the original, with many feeling it was an unnecessary continuation of a story that had reached its natural conclusion.

We don't really need to see *that* translated to screen.

But despite the intrigue around the upcoming sequel (and the amended storyline), and as a lover of the original flick, here's why I am vehemently against a continuation of this iconic story.

The 2006 film was perfect… exactly as it was.

Meryl Streep's iconic performance as Miranda Priestly (which earned her an Oscar nomination), Anne Hathaway's evolution from dowdy journalist to fashion-forward assistant, and Emily Blunt's scene-stealing supporting role created a perfect storm of entertainment that cannot be replicated.

Stanley Tucci's performance as Nigel was nothing short of iconic — delivering his backhanded compliments with such withering perfection that it's impossible to imagine anyone else rocking those fabulous glasses and brutal honesty.

It's like trying to recreate your grandmother's secret recipe — it never quite tastes the same. Would I love to see this charming cast work together again on a different project? ABSOLUTELY. But sadly, this is not the way.

Even the cast has been on the fence. Over the years, the film's lead actresses have expressed reservations about returning to the world of Runway magazine. Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt — while seemingly on board now — have both, in the past, seemed hesitant about whether revisiting these characters would be worthwhile.

And these are women who know a thing or two about what makes a good project.

"If everyone did it, I would be up for it," Blunt told People back in April 2018.

"I almost hope it doesn't [happen] because I think sometimes when you sequel everything kind of dilutes how special the original is."

Similarly, Anne Hathaway has previously expressed hesitation about a second movie, stating "I don't think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen."

When even the cast themselves have reservations, perhaps we should listen.

Looking at the rumoured story, the world of 2006 fashion magazines bears little resemblance to today's social media-dominated landscape. Would Miranda Priestly be battling TikTok influencers? Would Andy be managing Runway's Instagram account? Some things are better left unimagined.

The original film also ended on the perfect note — Andy reclaiming her authentic self while still growing from her experience, and Miranda showing a flicker of respect as they passed each other one last time. Sometimes, enough is enough.

Perhaps this is all the evidence we need that some classics are best left untouched. Instead of revisiting simply for the sake of nostalgia.

When the new film comes out — as is the way with rebooted shows like Gilmore Girls — we'll enjoy seeing our favourite characters once again, we'll giggle at the nods to the past, and we'll generally revel in it being a pleasant, nostalgic movie. But it won't live up to the original. Or be anywhere near as captivating.

So Hollywood, if you're listening, please put down that sequel script. We don't want it. We don't need it. And as Miranda would say, "By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me."

Don't get it twisted: I will 100 per cent be participating in the cultural experience of watching The Devil Wears Prada sequel with an audience, but does that mean I'm happy about it? Or think it could possibly live up to the original? Nope.

That's all.
