'I wore the viral one-legged jeans to the office for the day and I regret everything.'

ICYMI fashion has officially lost the plot because one-legged jeans are now an intentional thing people are wearing on actual purpose.

Yes, you read that right. Jeans. With. One. Leg.

When I first spotted this bizarre denim trend making headlines this week, I did a double-take.

Surely this was some kind of fashion joke? But no, luxury brands like Coperni, Louis Vuitton, and Bottega Veneta have all featured asymmetrical oddities on runways.

Half the material, not price.

Coperni's version, priced at a mere $517 (because apparently charging full price for half the fabric makes perfect sense), has been particularly controversial. Yet somehow, they've sold out online despite the mixed reactions.

The trend has even inspired DIY versions, with fashion enthusiasts taking scissors to perfectly good jeans in the name of style. Influencers like Kristy Sarah have been showcasing these half-pants on TikTok and Instagram, and I've watched with equal parts fascination and horror as the trend gained traction.

So, in a moment of what I can only describe as temporary insanity, I decided to try the one-legged jeans trend and wear them to work. Because nothing says 'take me seriously in this meeting' like showing up with one bare leg.

I opted for a more affordable version than Coperni's $517 option and I cut up a pair of my own old jeans.

Wearing one-legged jeans to the office.

In the Mamamia office, I am known to be a walking science experiment, so it was no surprise that the most common reaction was "Is this for an article?" always delivered with a tone that clearly communicated: "Please tell me this isn't your actual clothing choice."

But the funniest thing about it was that nobody believed me that it was an actual fashion trend I was "trying and testing". They just assumed I was being a walking one-woman circus.

By lunchtime, I had explained the concept of one-legged jeans approximately 17 times. Nobody believed me.

The real-world test.

About halfway through my coffee run, I completely forgot I was wearing such a trail-blazing outfit. Every time someone stared at me (which was approximately everyone), my first thought was 'mama's still got it' with a little confidence boost.

It wasn't until I caught my reflection in a shop window that I remembered I wasn't turning heads because of my natural charisma, but because I was essentially half-pantless in public.

The same thing happened when I went to the shops. For a blissful few seconds each time, I'd forget and wonder why I was suddenly getting so much attention. Then reality would crash back in.

The real world was decidedly less appreciative of my haute couture. I got stared at on the bus like I was unhinged, and a pair of young men actually scoffed as they walked past me. SCOFFED! The audacity.

After a full day of testing, I've compiled this helpful list of pros and cons for anyone brave enough to try this trend:

Pros:

  • You only need to shave one leg (this is actually genius for the time-poor among us)

  • You save money on moisturiser as you only need to moisturise one leg (cost of living crisis hack?)

  • It has that 'one leg under the doona, one out' feeling for temperature regulation (surprisingly practical)

Cons:

  • One leg was freezing when standing in the fridge aisle at the shops (goosebumps on one leg only is a weird sensation)

  • Outside the cocoon of the Mamamia office, I got stared at like I was wearing a tinfoil hat.

  • Strangers scoffed at me (fashion is wasted on some people).

  • If you don't like people staring at you, this trend is not for you.

The verdict.

Are one-legged jeans comfortable? Surprisingly, yes. There's excellent ventilation on one side.

Are they practical? Absolutely not. Try crossing your legs in a meeting and being taken seriously. Also, one leg gets colder than the other in different situations.

Are they flattering? Let's just say there's a reason most pants come with two legs.

Would I wear them again? Sadly, no. But the other jean leg has now been chopped off at the same length and I think make a fun pair of shorts which I didn't have at that particular length.

That said, fashion is supposed to be fun and experimental. Sometimes it's ridiculous, sometimes it's revolutionary, and sometimes it's just jeans with one leg missing.

But at least now, I can say I've truly walked the walk... even if it was with only one pant leg.
