3 oils you didn't know will work wonders on your hair.

When it comes to our hair, oil is often used as a dirty word. Hell, dry shampoo exists solely for the purpose of ridding our tresses of excess grease. No one wants to go out into the world looking like they dipped their head in a vat of Vaseline.

However, when we get down to the nitty-gritty, our hair actually benefits from the oils we strip away daily. By getting rid of them, we’re doing our locks a disservice. If you have dry, frizzy hair, adding one of the following three natural oils to your beauty routine will do wonders.

Coconut oil is pretty much the wonder of the natural beauty world. From cooking to dry skin, coconut oil has an insane number of uses.

But what does it do for your hair? Because coconut oil is high in vitamin E, lauric and capric acid, it offers up benefits like thicker, shiner hair and a healthier, dandruff free scalp. The fact that it smells great is just an added bonus.

For maximum effectiveness, buy extra-virgin coconut oil as it’s made from the first pressing of fresh, raw coconut without the addition of any chemicals.

My favorite: Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil – Perfect for a once a month deep conditioning treatment.

Argan Oil

While argan oil tends to be expensive, it’s worth every last penny. Like coconuts oil it’s chock full of vitamin E – however, argan oil also packs a punch of Omega fatty acids and antioxidants. This triple threat does amazing things for damaged, dry, and coarse hair.

Because of argan oil’s skyrocketing popularity, many skin care companies are offering up products containing the smoothing agent. The cheaper range products will contain a lot of silicone, so keep an eye on the ingredient labels and look for products containing 100% pure Moroccan argan oil for the best benefits.

My favorite: Josie Maran 100 percent Pure Argan Oil – Great for daily use! After your shower, while your hair is still wet, add a few drops of argan oil to your hair from scalp to ends.

Avocado Oil

Mmmmm, I do love avocados. Not only are they delicious, they’re bursting with proteins, healthy fats, amino acids and vitamins A, D, E and B6. When I’m not stuffing my face with avocados, I’m slicking my hair with their oil. The proteins help repair damage that’s already been done and prevents future breakage and frizz. The nutrient-rich oil also helps with thinning and scalp irritation.

My favorite: Redken All Soft Heavy Cream with Avocado Oil – A little goes a long way with this one, so use it once a week and concentrate on your ends rather than your roots.

I regularly abuse my hair. From superheated flat irons to using my ratting comb almost daily, my poor strands suffer horribly. Hair oils have been my saving grace. Give them a chance – you’ll be recommending them to your friends before you know it.

Using a pH balanced shampoo is also great at making good hair days. Here are some of our favourites (post continues after gallery)
