11,000 people shared their favourite makeup brands. You can buy the most popular at the chemist.

They say beauty is pain. Anyone who’s made the mistake of checking their bank account after a trip to the pharmacy or MECCA knows this.

One minute, you’re ‘just browsing’ the makeup aisle and the next, your shopping bag is full of 37 new cosmetic items you will never use every single day.

But in some good news for the beginning of 2019, beauty doesn’t have to break the budget. In fact, you can buy almost every makeup product from one of the most popular brands on the market for under $30.

A SiteJabber survey of 11,000 posts and images on the highly engaged beauty and cosmetics subreddit thread r/MakeupAddiction found affordable brand NYX Professional Makeup won out in every category researched (face, eyes, lips, day makeup, evening makeup).

Of the most mentioned brands in the e/MakeupAddiction subreddit, NYXProfessional Makeup came in first at 42 per cent. Maybelline (41 per cent), Urban Decay and Tarte Cosmetics (28 per cent), and Too Faced Cosmetics and Benefit (26 per cent) also made the list.

In posts about eye products and lip products, the survey found nude shades to be the most talked about. NYX Professional Makeup's Soft Matte Lip Creams ($12.95) in nude shades like Cape Town, Cabo, Leon, London and Los Angeles, are great lip colour options, while the Lid Lingerie Shadow Palette ($19.95) has six complimentary nude tones. You can also try a nude NYX Lip Liner ($9.95) and chuck balm over the top for an off-duty day lip.

For further evidence of NYX Professional Makeup's popularity in the budget cosmetics space, the brand's Matte Setting Spray ($14.95) also made Priceline's top ten best sellers in cosmetics from 2017 to 2018, as presented at the Priceline The Beauty Prescription Live event in September, 2018.

This news is a welcome relief, considering beauty products can take up a fair chunk of your budget if you're into makeup or have zero willpower while wandering through chemist aisles.

Although NYX Professional Makeup is known for attempting dupes of more expensive products from brands like Tarte and Too Faced, it's great for subbing in items like lipsticks, lip liners, eye shadows and illuminating primers into your routine of go-to products when you want to try a new shade without breaking the bank.
