New South Wales' two most popular baby names for 2016 have been announced.

Good news Olivers, you’re still number one.

That’s right, for the third year running Oliver was the most popular name for baby boys born in NSW in 2016.

Meanwhile, Olivia returned as the go-to for baby girls, which – fingers crossed – means that in a few years time schools across the state will be over-run with perfectly paired partners in crime.

The announcement comes as NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages prepares to release their Top 10 list from last year, which is due to be published in April.

“Traditional names, popular 100 years ago, are back in fashion. However, names come and go in cycles between generations,” Alana Sheil, Acting Registrar of NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages, said in a statement.

“Thirty years ago it was Joshua and Jessica, and their parents could have been Michael and Michelle. These days you’re more likely to be a Charlotte or Jack.”

There are a couple of new entries in the updated top 10, with Isaac and Jacob getting the boot in favour of Lachlan and Leo.

While, for girls, Isabella and Ruby are still holding Sophia and Zoe back from glory.

"When you look to the meaning of names, Oliver and Olivia are often linked to peace,” Ms Sheil said.

“Whether you go with popular name trends or opt for something unique, remember your child will likely carry their name for life so it’s important to choose wisely.”

Parents have 60 days to register their newborn's names and it's free in NSW.
