After encouraging Americans to leverage and throw their support behind US President-elect Donald Trump, Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman has been forced to clarify her comments amid considerable backlash.
In conversation with Access Hollywood on Saturday, Kidman said her comments had much less to do with Trump as a person and much more to do with the concept of democracy in its entirety.
“I was trying to stress that I believe in democracy and the American Constitution, and it was that simple,” said.
When asked to comment further on the backlash, Kidman did not see the need to elaborate.
“I’m out of it now,” she added. “That’s what I said and it’s that simple.”
In an interview with BBC Two’s Victoria Derbyshire last week to chat about her newest film Lion, conversation turned to her dual American and Australian citizenship, her opinion on Trump and the current political climate in the US.
Despite putting forward an initial disclaimer that she’s always “reticent to start commenting politically” and that she “never does” because she is more “issues-based”, Kidman went on to give her thoughts.
