Couple who vowed to divorce if same sex marriage was legalised provide infuriating statement.

Two and a half years ago, in June 2015, a completely unknown couple threatened to get a divorce.

“My wife and I just celebrated our 10-year anniversary. But later this year, we may be getting a divorce,” Nick Jensen wrote from City News. 

“My wife is the only woman I have ever loved, the mother of our children, my perfect match,” he continued.

Goodness. Then why would you want to get a…

Oh.

“My wife and I, as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognise the government’s regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnisation of same sex couples.”

Jensen wrote that when they signed their marriage certificate, they were endorsing the current definition of marriage. And if that changes, marriage is “not something in which we are able to partake”.

Overnight, Jensen’s pledge went viral.

The Facebook event, "Celebrating Nick & Sarah Jensen's DIVORCE!" was liked by over 150,000 people.

And then, well, we all sort of forgot about it.

Until now. 

"Hang on a minute.." we said to each other as we watched parliament cry and sing 'We Are Australian'.

"Are that couple getting divorced now or what?"

Luckily, News Corp contacted the couple for a statement.

"My previous public comments regarding civil divorce never envisaged me separating from my wife, but rather our marriage from the state," Jensen said and NO. DON'T YOU BACKTRACK THAT IS NOT WHAT YOU SAID.

"The legislation currently makes it untenable for us to do this under the law. The point we were highlighting and that still stands however is the fact that a redefinition of marriage changes the agreement under which we were originally married.

"We will be making no further comment."

That is not at all how it works Nick Jensen. 

Of course, we don't want any happily married couple to get divorced, and truly do wish Nick and Sarah Jensen all the best.

But - it must be said - that wasn't the deal.

And maybe, just maybe, they've realised that when two men, or two women marry, heterosexual marriage stays exactly the same. 

The world keeps spinning - there are no catastrophes.

We just live in a society that is a little more equal.
