Supermarkets (Coles, Woolies, IGA, Aldi).

Although all the big supermarkets are generally open through the new year, if you were hoping to snag some NYE countdown grapes, your best bet is to get to any shopping done in the AM or in the days before the December 31.

Supermarkets will have reduced trading hours, so to be safe, check your specific store's website or app for exact closing times, as some busy areas and specific locations might have variations or exceptions. In previous years, there have been early closures as the evening progressesed, with many stores nationwide winding down well before midnight to let their staff get in on the celebrations.

Find the official trading hours for Coles, and Aldi here.

On New Year's Day, stores will also be open but with even more limited hours, with some closed in specific states like WA or SA, so checking online is crucial.

Coles:

New Year's Eve: Coles stores will operate, but often close earlier than usual. Check your local Coles store here.

New Year's Day: Stores will be trading, but with earlier closing times. SA Metro Coles stores will be closed, while regional SA stores will be open with limited hours.

Woolworths:

New Year's Eve: Woollies stores nationwide will be open. Check your local Woolworths store here.

New Year's Day: Stores will be open but with shorter hours than usual trading hours, except for some closures in SA and NT.

Aldi:

New Year's Eve: Aldi stores will close significantly earlier than usual, not their regular closing time. For exact times, check out your local Aldi here.

New Year's Day: This is a National Public Holiday, so all banks are closed, and no payments are processed.

Banks & ATMs

In Australia, most major banks' physical branches typically shut early on NYE; however, specific hours vary by bank and state. NYE is not a national public holiday, but some states like SA and the Northern Territory observe a part-day public holiday — from 7pm to midnight.

While most branches will close earlier than usual, online and mobile banking services and ATMs will operate 24/7 on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day,

With no thanks to the confusing, varying state regulations and bank-specific policies, make sure to double-check the exact hours for your specific bank branch before visiting — no one wants to be doing any unnecessary trips on NYE. Luckily, most Aussie banks will have their holiday operating hours availble to view on their official website if you're unsure.

Banks:

New Year's Eve: Most banks will be closing 4pm, but it's not a universal public holiday in NSW, so checking is crucial. Check out St George, Wespac, Commbank, ANZ and NAB for the exact hours of your local branch.

New Year's Day: This is a National Public Holiday, so all banks are closed, and no payments are processed.

Bottle Shops

Don't stress, most bottle shops in Australia will be open while 2025 draws to a close, and into 2026 — but many will operate on reduced or varied hours. Once again, state and territory regulations vary, so checking with your local a great place to start. Most major bottle shop chains like BWS, Dan Murphy's and Liquorland will be open for business for the majority of the day, but with earlier closing times than their usual late-night trade.

While most Queensland licensed premises have an automatic extension to trade until 2 am on New Year's Day morning, and Victoria premises until 1 am on January 1st, SA, NT, ACT, WA and NSW all have varying restrictions, so its worth checking your prefered store's official website or have a look for signage at the physical store during your next bottlo dash.

Fast Food Joints

Now, this is an important one. Nothing says 'Happy New Year' like a 2 am quarter-pounder — and while many beloved fast food joints will remain open as the year rolls over, many others, particularly in restricted trading areas, may close early on or operate with reduced hours during NYD.

Most fast food locations like Maccas and KFC are run by individual franchisees who set their own holiday schedules, so a restaurant/drive-thru in one suburb could be open 24/7, while another in the next may have closed early.

To avoid missing out on your pregame feast or late-night snack (or both), jump onto the franchisees' store locator on their official website. Check out McDonalds' hours here.

Alternatively, many individual stores put their specific holiday trading hours on their store doors or post them on their local Facebook pages. But if all else fails, giving your local branch a buzz to confirm their exact operating hours is probably the most reliable option.

McDonalds:

New Year's Eve: Most Maccas locations stay open, some even 24/7. You can check you local here.

New Year's Day: Restaurants and drive-thrus will be open, often with slightly adjusted trading hours.

KFC:

New Year's Eve: KFC will operate as usual during New Year's Eve.

New Year's Day: Restaurants and drive-thrus will also be open for New Year's Day, often with slightly adjusted trading hours. Check here.

Hungry Jack's:

New Year's Eve: All Hungry Jack's restaurants will operate as usual during New Year's Eve. Their standard closing time is 9 pm or 10 pm, but you can check your local stores' trading hours here.

New Year's Day: Some Hungry Jack's locations might open later or be closed altogether for the public holiday. To be safe, check online or through the Hungry Jack's app.

Petrol Stations

Filling up on your way to see some fireworks shouldn't be an issue as servos don't have restricted trading hours on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day — woohoo! Most are expected to operate as normal as they're classified as exempt shops/essential services, meaning they can trade freely on public holidays.

When it comes to individual stations, particulary smaller or independent ones, its up to their discretion whether they choose to operate with reduced hours or close entirely depending on local staffing arrangements and demand.
