Eric Bana's new murder mystery Netflix series is like 'Yellowstone' meets 'The Dry'.

So… Eric Bana's new Netflix show is finally out, and it's a mystery thriller set in a remote, unforgiving landscape.

Before you ask — yes, it's pretty much just The Dry all over again.

We've got Eric Bana, brooding magnificently, solving murder mysteries and, in the process, uncovering secrets of his own.

But this time, instead of in the Australian landscape, the show takes place in a National Park in Yosemite.

Apparently, we can't get enough of this man staring intensely at crime scenes whilst carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. And honestly? We're not complaining.

In all seriousness though, Untamed and The Dry are different beasts entirely. Don't make the mistake of thinking they're the same, though the genre has become somewhat synonymous with Eric Bana in recent years.

Untamed follows Kyle Turner (Bana), a special agent in the elite Investigative Services Branch of the National Parks Service, who works to enforce human law in nature's vast wilderness.

When a woman is found dead in Yosemite National Park — initially appearing to be an accidental fall — Turner isn't convinced.

As he investigates what he believes to be a brutal murder, the case sends him on a collision course with dark secrets lurking within the park's million acres of wilderness, and buried deep in his own troubled past.

The victim was hurt, scared, and running from something — but what? Dun, dun, dun.

Bana is phenomenally closed off in this role — and that's exactly what makes it work. Here's a man who is far more comfortable in the wild than he is with other humans, drowning in trauma and secrets that threaten to consume him from the inside.

Bana plays this secret-ridden character brilliantly — you can see he's about to burst at any moment, yet maintains this stoic exterior that never quite cracks.

Honestly, at this point, Eric Bana could teach a masterclass in brooding on screen — the man has turned tortured masculinity into an art form.

Sam Neill, another fellow Aussie, appears as Chief Park Ranger Paul Souter, and he's absolutely amazing in a role that could have easily been a throwaway. Neill plays a man who's been the chief park ranger in Yosemite for half his life — a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend to Turner.

Turner is also joined by rookie park ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), who is somewhat new to the wilds of Yosemite.

Because Vasquez is less familiar with the park, we get to see this vast wilderness through her eyes, understanding both the beauty and the inherent dangers of a place like this.

The entire cast delivers exceptional performances across the board. Every character feels lived-in. There's not a weak link in the ensemble, which is crucial for a mystery that relies so heavily on atmosphere and character dynamics.

Untamed has an incredibly strong start — I was completely gripped within the first five minutes. The opening sequence is haunting and sets up the mystery beautifully, establishing the tone and stakes immediately. But here's where things get a bit rocky.

In the first episode alone, the show leans heavily into some predictable thriller tropes that I called within seconds of them appearing on-screen.

From there, it settles into a slowburn mystery that takes its time — perhaps a little too much time, in my opinion — getting into the meat of the story.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a good slowburn, but there are moments where the pacing feels genuinely sluggish rather than deliberately atmospheric. Some scenes linger just a beat too long, and you'll find yourself willing the story to move forward. It's no The Dry, you know?

That said, if you're willing to let it unfold naturally and forgive some early missteps, it's absolutely worth the investment.

The show understands that the best mysteries aren't just about the whodunit — they're about the why and the how it affects everyone involved.

Once it finds its rhythm, some real psychological complexity begins to emerge. The wilderness setting becomes a character in itself, with Yosemite's sprawling size — nearly a million acres — providing countless places for secrets to hide and killers to disappear.

Despite the inevitable comparisons to The Dry, Untamed stands firmly on its own merits.

It's a compelling, well-acted mystery that showcases why wilderness crime drama continues to captivate audiences. Yes, it stumbles out of the gate with some tired tropes and pacing issues, but the strong performances and atmospheric storytelling ultimately win out.

If you're sitting at home on a weekend and love a good mystery thriller, throw this on.

Untamed is now streaming on Netflix, and it's the perfect binge for anyone who appreciates quality storytelling set against America's most stunning — and dangerous — landscapes.

And if Eric Bana's brooding detective work in The Dry left you wanting more, consider this your fix.
