Is Netflix's The Thursday Murder Club based on a book?

It is indeed. The Thursday Murder Club is adapted from Richard Osman's wildly successful 2020 debut novel of the same name. The book took the literary world by storm and quickly climbed bestseller lists across the globe. It's actually the first in a series of four books (with a fifth reportedly in the works), so if the film is a hit, we could potentially see more silver-haired sleuthing in our future.

Interestingly, Osman revealed that he deliberately chose not to be involved in writing the screenplay, though he did visit the set.

"I honestly would rather spend my time writing another book than getting involved in all of that, so I absolutely left them to it," he said.

The screenplay was instead crafted by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote.

What is the plot of The Thursday Murder Club?

The film follows four irrepressible retirees — Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim and Joyce — who live in a peaceful retirement community and meet up every Thursday to solve cold-case murders just for fun. These amateur sleuths have been contentedly poring over unsolved crimes from the safety of their retirement village until a real murder happens right on their doorstep.

When faced with an actual case that hits close to home, the unlikely quartet puts their combined skills to the test, risking their own lives to catch the culprit. As Netflix cheekily describes it, this is "a whodunit with teeth — false ones, of course."

Director Chris Columbus (known for the first two Harry Potter films) has told Collider that while they're sticking to the storyline of the first novel, some plot elements have been adapted for the screen, though they've preserved the book's "sharp, witty humour and emotional complexity."

Who is in the cast of The Thursday Murder Club?

Hold onto your hats because this cast is genuinely extraordinary. The four protagonists are played by absolute screen royalty:

Helen Mirren stars as Elizabeth Best, a former spy with a mysterious past. Pierce Brosnan takes on the role of Ron Ritchie, a former trade union official, while Sir Ben Kingsley portrays Ibrahim Arif, a retired psychiatrist. And last but not least, Celia Imrie is starring as Joyce Meadowcraft. Talk about star-studded.

And if that wasn't impressive enough, the supporting cast includes Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Richard E. Grant, and more.

Columbus himself has gushed about working with such talent, telling Netflix: "This is the finest cast I've worked with since Potter. They're just so incredibly well-prepared, and it's because they do everything. They do theatre, they do television, they do film, and they've developed those sorts of muscles."

When is the release date for The Thursday Murder Club?

Mark your calendars for Thursday, August 28, 2025, when The Thursday Murder Club will be available to stream on Netflix. How fitting that it's arriving on a Thursday.

There are also rumours of a limited cinema release just before it lands on the streaming platform, though Netflix hasn't officially confirmed this yet. The film completed production in September 2024 after beginning filming in June of last year.

The project is a collaboration between Netflix and Amblin Entertainment (Steven Spielberg's production company), giving it some serious Hollywood credentials despite its quintessentially British setting and characters.

So grab your comfiest cardigan, brew a cup of tea, and prepare for what might be the most delightfully murderous retirement community to ever grace your screen.
